The Business of Animation

business contract

My name is Antonio Guerra; I live in Bogotá, Colombia, S.A.

I have been a scriptwriter for the last four years and with a group we created the only TV animated series produced in Colombia, until now. Due to this we were contacted by a company owner of a successful internet site for teenagers, to develop its logo (a little devil by the name of “titiri”), in a project for a t.v. series destined to the international market.

Writer's Guild of America and Animation

Okay, I've looked at this a number of times but can anyone tell me how the WGA agreement with animation works? Most of the sources I have found are from at least 1999-2000 when Mission Hill signed on as a signatory series but other guides I have say that animation is not covered by the WGA and WGA members can do nonguild stuff in animation until more companies are signed (from a recent book).

Thanks

Warner Bros. "Incredible" Blunder

By HAWK72700 | Tuesday, November 16, 2004 at 4:55pm

When I visited Sony Pictures Imageworks and saw some test scenes from Polar Express last year, I was extremely skeptical. I figured with Tom Hanks and Bob Zemekis attached, there was some hope for the project. But mostly looking at the material, I felt it just didn't work.

Well I don't want to argue, on this post anyway, wheteher they should have even made Polar Express the way they decided to (does anyone remember Final Fantasy, it wasn't just the weak script).

head-hunters? good idea?

By Zodiac | Friday, November 12, 2004 at 10:00pm

I've learned enough over the last few years to know that the majority of jobs in animation are never posted on hotjobs. Short of networking contacts at the moment, I have been considering approaching a head hunter or even hiring an agent to get my name out. Problem is, I have no idea where to start (these sorts of things aren't listed in the yellow pages...) Any suggestions, personal stories, or forewarnings? The hoped result would be having the right people see the right stuff and offer me the right $

What do you think of the Pixar "Cars" trailer?

By pcdoctor | Sunday, November 7, 2004 at 10:51pm

Here is the trailer.

or

http://www.pixar.com/theater/trailers/cars/index.html

I saw it yesterday and I wasn't that impressed.
I just can't see getting thrilled about a movie featuring cartoon cars.
Someone on this forum stated that this movie might get the same rating as "A Bug's Life".
Probably so.

Overtime Pay for Animators

By VFXfan | Thursday, October 28, 2004 at 6:17am

Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand that it is industry practice for non-union animators to not get paid overtime when working more than 40 hours a week. However, go take a look at the relevant legislation posted on the Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division website ( at http://www.dol.gov/dol/allcfr/Title_29/Part_541/29CFR541.302.htm down in paragraph c 2 and look for the word "animator" ).

Buisness Startup info

By Acelk | Tuesday, October 26, 2004 at 11:52am

Gwah, I refuse to believe you have to come from a rich family to start an animation buisness.

Lots of work is done and I intend to get a building and start hiring people.
Can you get Grants for this sort of thing? Or anything would be great.

I guess what im looking for is some urls to get the ball rollen.
And is there such a thing on AWN or anywhere else that gives tips to starting an animation buisness?

Any money info or guides would be greatly appreciated.

Any Television Animation made in USA?

By CMerritt | Sunday, October 24, 2004 at 12:55pm

I just found out about:
http://www.sunwoo.com/eng/busi/busi_ani02.html

They do the animation production of one of my favorite shows, as well as many I've heard of, for American companies - so I wonder if any television animation is made in USA.

Does anyone know who makes television show episodic animation in USA?

Thanks.

Business partnership - Art school in Moscow

By tomacmuni | Saturday, October 23, 2004 at 4:12am

Hello

I am looking for expressions of interest from venture capitalists in funding and establishing a private digital art school in Moscow, Russia.

I am from New Zealand, and work as a digital artist in London. I worked in Moscow for two years at Mbl Studio and at Mosfilm (BSGraphics). It was an interesting environment, but I observed and others agreed, that there is little formal training of any kind for art or digital art weighted towards those interested in acquiring skills for the film, broadcast or game industry.
