Walt Disney Animation Studios Cancels ‘Tiana’ Series

Series is the first casualty of the studios’ recent decision to abandon all original longform content for streaming, which may also result in layoffs at Vancouver studio.

She was almost there! The upcoming Tiana animated series, most recently teased by Walt Disney Animation Studios' Chief Creative Officer Jennifer Lee, has been officially cancelled, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Lee stepped down as CCO this past September, with Jared Bush taking over the role.

The series is the first casualty of the studios’ recent decision to abandon all original longform content for streaming, which also means layoffs most likely are coming to the Vancouver studio where the show was being produced. An unannounced feature, which was also set to debut on Disney+, has also been cancelled.

Tiana, which would have served as a sequel to the beloved 2009 film Princess and the Frog, was set to feature original voice actress Anika Noni Rose. Last October, Joyce Sherri (Midnight Mass) joined the series as lead writer and director, replacing Stella Meghie (The PhotographThe Weekend, Jean of the Joneses), who remained onboard the project as an executive producer, along with Lee.

All is not lost for Tiana fans, however, as a shortform special inspired by the original film is in early development. Joyce Sherri will serve as director/writer alongside co-director Steve Anderson.
