Produce Customized Disney Stationery Items Via New Website

Online users can customize their own stationery goods with Disney characters via Disney Magic Artist online (www.disney.com/magicartist), recently launched by Disney Online, part of the Walt Disney Internet Group. The new site, powered by HP, allows visitors to design and print their own coloring pages, greeting cards, calendars, play sets and personalized pages for scrapbooks and photo albums. "Printables have always ranked among our most popular online attractions," said Ken Goldstein, evp/gm for Disney Online.

Warner Bros. Gets The Animated Vote Out Online

Warner Bros. Online and Warner Bros. Animation are soliciting animation fans to watch and vote for their favorite original cartoons online in Cartoon Monsoon, a new area of the Warner Bros.' Website. Up-and-coming creators that have made it past a selection jury are now competing for most popular cartoon. New works are presented every two weeks until the final run-off in May 2003. Visitors to the site may complete a scorecard and discuss the shorts.

Web Films Feted At Sundance Online Fest

Showcasing innovative films created for the Internet, the Third Annual Sundance Online Film Festival features 31 projects in four categories: Animation, Short Subject, Gallery and New Forms. The films are now online for viewing at www.sundance.org. National Film Board Of Canada Launches U.S. Online Store

The National Film Board of Canada is now making it easier for U.S. residents to purchase its acclaimed videos and DVDs with the launch of its new online store. Among its nearly 6,000 titles are compilations of Oscar-winning and nominated animated films and best-selling videos like LEONARD MALTIN'S ANIMATION FAVORITES FROM THE NATIONAL FILM BOARD OF CANADA. The NFB also offers documentaries, dramas, educational and kids' titles in its online store. Viewpoint and America Online Expand Relationship

Viewpoint Corporation, a leading provider of interactive media technologies and services, announced that it has expanded its relationship with America Online, Inc. to cover use of Viewpoint technology for new features in AOL 8.0, Instant Messaging, and within other applications. The new arrangement involves use of Viewpoint interactive graphics within the recently released AOL 8.0 client, including many facets of the AOL desktop.

Framestore Animate Cow And Bear While Communicating Online

Framestore CFC has recently completed work on a new TV commercial titled "Cow and Bear," which features two animated plastic containers (a chocolate syrup-filled cow and a honey-filled bear) fighting over the pleasure of dispensing their contents on a plate of Kellogg's Eggo waffles. The 30-second spot represents the first time that the U.K.-based Framestore, best known for their work on the Discovery Channel's WALKING WITH DINOSAURS mini-series, has created photo-real character animation for a prominent U.S. client. Another first for Framestore was handling all post-production online.

House Of Moves Mo-Cap Library Available Online

House of Moves Motion Capture Studios (HOM) has made more than 5,000 stock motion files available online. The moves can be browsed and ordered online by installing House of Moves custom 3D-motion viewer called DivaView. A free beta version of the viewer can be downloaded at www.moves.com/divaview/divaview.zip. Available libraries of moves include football, basketball, baseball, ice hockey, special ops, medieval combat, dancing and more. Some moves are available in multiple formats, and all 3D motion-capture formats are available for an additional charge.

Marvel Superheroes Play Online

Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, The X-Men and 4,700 other characters from the Marvel universe are part of a 10-year worldwide licensing agreement between Vivendi Universal Publishing (VU Publishing) and Marvel Enterprises, Inc. The arrangement grants VU Publishing's games division (VU Games) the right to develop and publish online massively multi-player (OLMMP) games based on Marvel's superheroes. The first OLMMP title under the new agreement is targeted for release in 2005.

Sony Online Entertainment Continues Its EverQuest

Sony Online Entertainment Inc. is developing EVERQUEST II, an upgrade to the existing popular online multi-player game. Using a new in-house 3D engine that takes advantage of a wide variety of recent technological advances in 3D hardware and software such as per pixel lighting, dynamic environment mapping, and a fully programmable surface shader system, the game graphics will be upgraded and new features will be added including the ability to own real estate, ride horses, command ships and experience increased character customization.

Sundance Holds Its 2nd Annual Online Film Festival

The 2nd annual Sundance Online Film Festival featuring animation, live-action, documentary, interactive and new form shorts is available for viewing until January 20, 2002. Selected works of animation from the Online Film Festival will also screen on January 15 and January 19 at the Sundance Film Festival Animation Spotlight: Online on Screen. The screening will be a compilation of the online animated works shown on a big screen and will feature a Q&A with the filmmakers.

Ubi Soft Launches Online Game Portal

Ubi Soft Entertainment's online division has launched ubi.com, a new gaming portal that allows gamers to play games and participate in online communities. ubi.com is now available in North America and France and will eventually spread to other countries. The company also has plans to extend ubi.com to console gamers later in the year. Since online communities are an important part of the gaming culture, ubi.com has licensed state-of-the-art forum technology to make it easy for players to post their comments and ideas online and hopes to give fans the ultimate community experience.

Online Gaming Not Yet Profitable For Electronic Arts.

In an attempt to reach a previously announced goal of making its online gaming unit successful by the year 2003, game company Electronic Arts (EA) said it will cut as many as 250 jobs at its EA.com division, reported REUTERS. The cuts represent about 1/3 of EA.coms employees. Electronic Arts employs over 3600 people worldwide and is the number one video game publisher in the U.S. The company is also the exclusive game provider to AOL. EAs first foray into the subscription online gaming arena, the five-episode suspense thriller MAJESTIC, launched online in August 2001.

MTV Restructures And Lays Off Hundreds

On Monday, October 29, 2001, MTV Networks announced a worldwide restructuring plan resulting in 450 lay-offs, approximately 9% of its full-time staff. The departments most significantly affected are the online divisions and MTV Animation. The once separate online operations will be integrated with the television businesses meaning staffers for the online division will be moved out of their current location at 770 Broadway and merged with the television operation in midtown Manhattan. This move represents the majority of the staff cuts.

Nick.Com Launches Online Comic Book Crimson Chin

Nick.com has announced the launch of its first online comic book, THE CRIMSON CHIN, an interactive spin-off of Nickelodeon's animated comedy series, THE FAIRLY ODDPARENTS. The TV series follows the adventures of 10-year-old Timmy Turner and his troublesome fairy godparents Cosmo and Wanda. In August, in a move for TV and online convergence, THE CRIMSON CHIN Webisodes will debut as one-minute interstitials on Nickelodeon.

WB Online Launches New Webisodes Of Steppenwolf

WB.com has launched the first of eight all-new installments of the highly popular STEPPENWOLF: THE X-CREATURES PROJECT Web series. Additionally, the original eight installments, which launched on Warner Bros. Online in April 2001, are now available at Netscape.com. The new Webisodes will debut every three weeks on WarnerBros.com, while the first-story-arc installments roll out biweekly on Netscape. The series sends a group of adventures into the deep jungle in search of the x-creatures.
