ACM SIGGRAPH Announces Award Winners

ACM SIGGRAPH presented three awards at this weeks SIGGRAPH 2005 conference (which attracted more than 29,122 participants to Los Angeles) to recognize individuals who made a significant contribution to the computer graphics community:

* Tomoyuki Nishita of the University of Tokoyo received the prestigious Steven Anson Coons Award for Outstanding Creative Contributions to Computer Graphics for his inspirational work on rendering of natural phenomena.

HypeFest 2005 Announces Award Winners

HypeFest, a unique festival held July 30-31, 2005, at the CineSpace in Hollywood to unite and showcase independent filmmakers with commercial communities, concluded its weekend-long screenings and festivities with an awards show and party sponsored by the Tucson Film Office. The festival showcased approximately 75 original short-subject works from filmmakers around the world.

MADGA, by Chel White, received STASH MAGAZINE'S Animation Award, which honored the best-animated project.

Starz Presents First Starz Ion Award at Maui Film Festival

Starz Ent. Group Llc. (SEG) presented its first Starz Ion Award to animator Jennifer Shiman at the Maui Film Festival earlier this week during the festival's Cosmic Closing Night Party. Shiman, creator of Angryalien.com, was honored for her 30-second animated bunny shorts that spoof famous Hollywood films.

The Starz Ion Award was developed to recognize creativity and innovation and to pay tribute to emerging talent in the field of short form entertainment. Shiman's bunny shorts have been featured on Starz, Starz On Demand and Starz Ticket.

Lucas to Receive 33rd AFI Life Achievement Award June 9

The Force is definitely with George Lucas: On the heels of the record breaking box office results from the first week of his last STAR WARS saga, EPISODE III REVENGE OF THE SITH, Lucas will receive the American Film Institute's (AFI) 33rd Life Achievement Award on June 9, at a gala event. Filmmaker, friend and past recipient Steven Spielberg will present Lucas with the award at the tribute, which will be held at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles. THE 33rd AFI LIFE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: A TRIBUTE TO GEORGE LUCAS will air on USA Network on June 20, at 9:00 p.m. (ET/PT).

fmx/05 Breaks Records & Doles Out Awards

fmx/05, the 10th International Conference On Animation, Effects, Realtime and Content, saw a record breaking attendance of 3,500 people as it handed its top award to Blur Studios Oscar nominated short film GOPHER BROKE. Compared to 2004, this makes for a plus of about 50% or 1,200 visitors an increase that is mainly due to the excellent response of the industry. The event ran from April 27 to April 30 in Stuttgart, Germany.

Through My Thick Glasses Wins at Animated Encounters

The U.K.s most prestigious animation festival, Animated Encounters, handed out its awards on April 23, 2005, at a packed ceremony at Bristols Watershed, hosted by Bristol radio, GWRs popular breakfast show presenters Bush and Troy.

Picking up the Audience Award for the most popular film at the festival was Norwegian director Pjotr Sapegins THROUGH MY THICK GLASSES. Sapegin was in Bristol to receive his award in person, which was an unusual trophy specially designed by Bristol prop and model-makers Cod Steaks.

Triplets of Belleville Wins Top Genie Award

Oscar-nominee THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE won the Best Film prize at the 25th Genie Awards, Canada's top film award, which was held on March 21, 2005, in Toronto.

Seamless visual effects drama HEAD IN THE CLOUDS, starring Charlize Theron, Penelope Cruz and Stuart Townsend, directed by John Duigan, took home the most awards for the categories of editing, costume, score and cinematography.

In the animation front, Chris Landreths Oscar winner RYAN won for animated short.

The Incredibles Wins Two Oscars & Ryan Wins Shorts Race

Pixar earned its second animated feature Oscar for THE INCREDIBLES at the 77th Annual Academy Awards, Feb. 27, 2005, while Skywalker Sound won the Best Sound Editing Award. Animated feature was the award up for the night, collected by a jubilant Brad Bird. He thanked the holy trinity at Pixar referring to Ed Catmull, Steve Jobs and John Lasseter for creating the greatest studio on the face of the Earth, Bird said.

Fourth Annual DVD Exclusive Awards Nominees Announced

THE ULTIMATE MATRIX COLLECTION (Warner Home Video), THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING SPECIAL EXTENDED EDITION (NEW LINE HOME ENT.), THE STAR WARS TRILOGY (Fox Home Ent.) and MARY POPPINS 40TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION (Buena Vista Home Ent.) have scored major nominations for the Fourth Annual DVD Exclusive Awards.

The 2004 DVD Exclusive Awards, sponsored by DVD EXCLUSIVE magazine, a sister publication to VARIETY, will be presented on Feb. 8, 2005, at the Annenberg Building at the California Science Center near the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

Takuo Miyagishima to Receive First Oscar in 2005

Design engineer Takuo Miyagishima, has been voted the Gordon E. Sawyer Award by the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He will be presented with the first Oscar statuette of 2005 at the Scientific and Technical Awards Dinner on February 12 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel.

Established in 1981, the Sawyer Award is "presented to an individual in the motion picture industry whose technological contributions have brought credit to the industry."

Zemeckis to Receive VES Lifetime Achievement Award

Godliness Takes Top Prize at Brisbane

The 5th Brisbane International Animation Festival committee has announced the winners in all of its competitions. Claudia Zollers DIE STRAFE GOTTES (GREAT IS THE MYSTERY OF GODLINESS) took home the top jury prize. Zoller received 3ds max from Discreet Software, BodyPaint 3D R2 and 20 minutes of 35mm Kodak film stock. The competition was judged by a jury comprising of the Griffith University 5th Brisbane International Animation Festival international guests Frank and Caroline Mouris, Isaac Kerlow, Bill Plympton, Ken Bielenberg and Alonzo Ruvalcaba.

George Lucas to Receive AFI Life Achievement Award

George Lucas has been selected by the American Film Institute's (AFI) Board of Trustees to receive the 33rd AFI Life Achievement Award. The award will be presented to Lucas at a gala tribute in Los Angeles in June 2005.

"I've been very fortunate to have had a long career doing what I love to do, and being recognized by AFI for it is really an honor," Lucas said. "I'm proud to be counted among such an extraordinary group of people whose lives are dedicated to the art of making movies."

The American Cinematheque at the Egyptian Theatre presents a limited engagement of Academy Award nominated and winning shorts on Fridays. All screenings will start at 8:00 pm. The screenings include this year's Academy Award nominated and winning shorts, in both the animation and live-action categories.
