Thirteen students from nine different colleges and universities have been named winners in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' 33rd annual Student Academy Awards competition. They will participate in a week of industry-related activities and social events culminating June 10, 2006, with the awards presentation ceremony at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater. One film student from South Africa also has been selected to receive this year's Honorary Foreign Student Film Award.

fmx/06, the 11th International Conference on Animation, Effects, Realtime and Content from May 3-6, 2006 in Stuttgart, Germany, announces its prizes. With more than 5,000 international visitors 40% more than last year fmx/06 included 350 speakers from all over the world presented more than 300 lectures, demos, workshops and screenings about creation, production and distribution in all forms of digital content.

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced the nominees for the first Emmy Award to be presented for original entertainment programming created specifically for non-traditional viewing platforms, including computers, mobile phones, iPods, PDAs and similar devices. The new Emmy Award will first be presented at the 33rd Annual Creative Arts Daytime Emmy Awards, hosted by Meredith Vieira, on April 22, 2006, at New York Citys Marriott Marquis.

The Ann Arbor Film Festival wrapped up its 2006 event on March 26, 2006 with the awarding of its prizes. The Chris Frayne Award Best Animated Film went to MARVELOUS KEEN LOONEY BIN by Lizzi Arkana. Moreover, David Chais FUMI AND THE BAD LUCK FOOT won the Prix DeVarti Funniest Film award. In honorable mentions, Bruce Alcocks AT THE QUINTE HOTEL was a recipient. The 6th annual Game Developers Choice Awards will devote a portion of the ceremony to honoring a group of individuals whose efforts stand out in the advancement of the interactive entertainment industry. The ceremony, which is produced and hosted by the Game Developers Conference (GDC) and presented by the International Game Developers Association (IGDA), will take place on Wednesday, March 22, 2006 at the San Jose Civic Auditorium.

In its inaugural year for award animated feature, The Producers Guild of America has awarded in top animation prize to WALLACE & GROMIT: CURSE OF THE WERE-RABBIT. The announcement was made at a ceremony on Jan. 22, 2006, at the Century Plaza hotel. The other animated films nominated were CORPSE BRIDE, ROBOTS, CHICKEN LITTLE and MADAGASCAR. Special-effects veteran Stan Winston was awarded the Tesla Award for visionary achievement in filmmaking technology from the International Press Academy on Dec. 17, 2005, reports SCI FI WIRE.

Winston responded by saying, "This award is for technical innovation, and it's interesting that I'm getting this award, because I really don't know much about technology, and, in fact, I'm techno-ignorant. I am an artist... Any technology I created for special effects I was forced to develop in order to do the things I love... I created it for the characters in the movies."

Juried prizewinners were announced for the 2005 Bethel Film Festival. Taking the Best Animation award was FLYAWAY from director Danny Oakley. The short film was produced by Winston-Salem, North Carolina-based Out Of Our Minds Animation Studio, which landed nearly $2 million in funding from private investors for the production of its first feature-length animated film, MAGISTICAL, earlier this summer.

STAR WARS: EPISODE III REVENGE OF THE SITH is the winner of the 9th Annual Hollywood Film Festivals "Hollywood Movie of the Year Award." Director George Lucas will be presented with the award at the Hollywood Awards Gala Ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Oct. 24.

"Mr. Lucas is a creative genius, a visionary at its best," said festival founder/exec director Carolos de Abreu.
