Kung Fu Chickens Kick Into Cartoon Network

Cartoon Network Germany has acquired all TV rights to CHOP SOCKY CHOOKS, a DECODE Entertainment co-production with Aardman Animations, the companies announced today.

The Chooks are a crack team of Kung Fu chickens: Chuckie Chan, Chick P and KO Joe.

The three plucky heroes work undercover at Wasabi World, a towering shopping mall run by their archenemy Dr. Wasabi, a mutated piranha and the head of an evil retain empire.

Fairly OddParents Special A Hit

Nickelodeon's THE FAIRLY ODDPARENTS' President's Day special, FAIRLY ODDBABY, hit a magical ratings high as the year-to-date's number-one entertainment program on all broadcast and basic cable television in all kids' demos (K2-11; K6-11; tweens 9-14).

As well as ranking second only to Super Bowl programming among overall TV shows this year with kids and tweens, the hour-long animated special (8-9 p.m. Feb. 18) scored a whopping 15.4/5.3 million K2-11, up double digits (+96 percent) over last year's like time period.

New Volumes From the Disney Vault

Three new volumes from the Disney vault (with new footage) will be released on Nov. 11, they announced Wednesday.

All three new two-disc sets of DESTINO, DR SYN, ALIAS THE SCARECROW andCHRONOLOGICAL DONALD, VOLUME 4 will make up the eighth installment of the popular series Walt Disney Treasures, which features rarely seen footage presented with updated color and sound.

DESTINO began in 1946 as a collaboration between Walt Disney and the famed surrealist painter Salvador Dali.

New Thomas & Friends DVD, Toys

Thomas the Tank Engine pulls into the station this fall in his first feature-length DVD special, THE GREAT DISCOVERY.

THE GREAT DISCOVERY, due in stores Sept. 9, is the first Thomas & Friends release to be narrated by actor Pierce Brosnan, who will also voice the new PBS series, launching in September.

Toy partners Learning Curve and HIT Toy as well as publishing partner Random House will be supporting this title with new tie-in products.

Additionally, the grassroots DAY OUT WITH THOMAS tour will be themed THE GREAT DISCOVERY in 2008.

Toshiba To Phase Out HD DVD

Following the news that Wal-Mart and Netflix would only carry rival product Blu-ray, Toshiba will end the format war and discontinue its line of HD DVD players.

"While we continue to believe HD DVD is the best format for consumers, based on its technological advancements and the value and quality inherent in our player offerings, recent market developments have led us to the decision to choose new and different paths," said Yoshi Uchiyama, group vice president of Toshiba's Digital A/V Marketing Group.

Eliot Kid Licensed to Cartoon Network in Europe

Cake Distribution announced today their latest comedy action series ELIOT KID was licensed to Cartoon Network for its EMEA Channels.

The deal brings ELIOT KID further into Europe, after securing sales to TF1, BBC, ABC Australia, Disney Channel France, Italy, Spain and Germany, RTBF, TSR, TV2 Denmark and RUV Iceland.

ELIOT KID, a Safari de Ville/Samka Productions co-production, is a comedy-action-adventure animated cartoon for children ages 6-9.

Independent producer Novel Entertainment closed an international sales and distribution deal with Little Bird Rights to distribute the popular HORRID HENRY TV animation series around the world (excluding the United Kingdom), the companies announced today.

IMAX Corporation announced today that THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES, a fantasy adventure based on the best-selling series of books, opened well in IMAX theaters over the five-day opening weekend, grossing approximately $1.9 million of the film's $26.8 million total, or 7 percent of the overall box office.

Nineteen of the top twenty locations in North America included an IMAX theater.

PEDRO AND FRANKENSHEEP, a new series by The Brothers McLeod (Greg and Myles) and Phil Cooper, will be released on Children's BBC this week on CBBC.

Autodesk Reduces Price for Maya Unlimited

Autodesk announced today they are lowering the price for Autodesk Maya Unlimited 3D modeling, animation, and rendering software.

Autodesk also announced Maya 2008 Extension 2 software, which provides enhanced creative control over polygon modeling and UV texturing, as well as significant improvements to the Maya Muscle tool set.

Maya Unlimited contains everything offered in Maya Complete software, plus innovations such as Maya Fluid Effects, Maya nCloth, Maya Hair, Maya Fur, and Maya Live.

Pricing for Autodesk Maya Complete remains unchanged.

The Walt Disney Company's subsidiary the Walt Disney Company (Southeast Asia) Pte. Ltd. will increase its strategic investment in UTV Software Communications Limited, the companies announced today.

Disney's investment further establishes its entry into the Indian market through UTV and complements its fast-growing Disney-branded businesses and long-held joint venture in ESPN STAR Sports.

With this investment, Disney will be increasing its stake in UTV to 32.1 percent on a fully diluted share capital basis.
