Perry's Newest Madea Project To Be Animated

Tyler Perry's signature character "Madea" will be the focal point of a new animated series.

The untitled cartoon will be funded and produced before the show is shopped to networks.

Perry dresses in drag for Madea, an opinionated and domineering African American woman.

The character has been featured in many of Perry's features, including DIARY OF A MAD BLACK WOMAN, MADEA'S FAMILY REUNION and the forthcoming MEET THE BROWNS.

"After receiving thousands of letters from parents telling me how much their kids love Madea and realizing that a lot of the plays were not kid friendly," Perry said "I wanted to do something more appropriate, and this seems to be it. A 'Madea' animation looks like the best way."

Perry's production company has teamed with Exodus Film Group (who are also financing) to produce the project, the companies announced Monday.

Perry will serve as creator, writer and executive producer of the unnamed series, which could potentially be distributed directly to DVD.

Exodus CEO John Eraklis, president Max Howard and VP of business development Jerome Williams will also executive produce the series.
