Katzenberg Greenlights CGI Rock & Roll Dream

DreamWorks has signed David Diamond and David Weissman (THE FAMILY MAN), to write a yet untitled CG animated musical history of rock 'n' roll, it was reported by VARIETY and later confirmed by a DreamWorks spokesperson. Jeffrey Katzenberg and the writers came up with the concept as they worked together on the rewrite of DreamWorks' EVOLUTION. The project was then officially pitched to Katzenberg and DreamWorks' head of development Lance Young. No official release has been issued but the concept involves setting hit songs in rock history into a CGI format.

X-Men Battle Is Over

Twentieth Century Fox and Marvel Enterprises have resolved their differences concerning the syndicated television series MUTANT X. Terms of the settlement were not released but have been amicably resolved according to a Fox statement and both sides are looking forward to expanding the relationship. Fox produced the X-MEN film in 2000, based upon the original comic book characters. A sequel is scheduled for release this year.

Hard Life For Indie On The Web

Romanian animator Giuliano Draguleanu has launched a Website for his 3D animated short film A HARD LIFE, www.ahardlife.com. Independent Draguleanu, based in Bucharest, said the site serves to " to document the production of the movie and to give reference to anyone who wants to produce a similar project." He hopes this site promotion will net him additional financing. The story is set in New York City in the '30s, where a certain bug is having the adventure of its life, struggling to cross a street. "The idea of the whole movie is actually a very simple one," according to Draguleanu.

There's A New Vid-Kid On The Block For Indies

Independent film producers Jeffrey Sneller (The Adventures of Pinocchio) and Charles Fries have recently formed Santa Barbara Home Video to market and distribute indie films on home video. The independent distribution company is a subsidiary of Santa Barbara Filmed-Entertainment, which is co-producing the feature film Doctor Lopez in the fourth quarter of 2003 in association with Andrew Steven's Powerhouse Entertainment. The first SBHV release is the Sneller/Raju Patel produced The New Adventures of Pinocchio.

Futurama Wins First WGA Animation Award

Animation writer Ken Keeler picked up the first ever Animation Award at the 55th Annual Writers Guild Awards bi-coastal ceremonies March 8, 2003 for his FUTURAMA teleplay "Godfellas." It was the first time all animated programs (long form original, long form adaptation, specials and episodic) competed in the new television animation category. Animation programming scripted by WGA members had previously been submitted under the appropriate category (i.e. 30-minute comedy, hour-long drama).

Clifford Top Dog In Daytime Emmy Race

CLIFFORD THE BIG RED DOG was the big winner again of four nominations, topping all other animated shows, at The 30th Annual Daytime Emmy Award nominations announced on March 12, 2003. Almost exactly a year ago, on March 13, 2003, CLIFFORD led the animation pack with five noms. The PBS series is produced by Scholastic Productions and Mike Young Productions. Close behind was Nicks DORA THE EXPLORER, nabbing three nominations, including one for Outstanding Children's Animated Program.

Oscar Shorts Get Theatrical Run

If you'd like to see all five Oscar-nominated animated shorts on the big screen you now can in select cities thanks to Apollo Cinema, an international shorts distribution company, that has packaged them into a compilaton package that premieres March 14, 2003 in Los Angeles and New York. The animated shorts have been combined with live-action short contenders into a single 91-minute program that will run daily for two weeks at the Laemmle Fairfax 3 in Los Angeles and the Two Boots Pioneer Theater in New York.

Silverwing Takes Flight to MIP-TV

Bardel Entertainment will be unveiling its new animated action series SILVERWING at MIP-TV. Based on the first novel in a trilogy by Ken Oppel, it follows the coming-of-age tale of Shade, who is in search for his father. The book is selling well in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Germany, France, Denmark, Australia, Holland and will soon be available in Italy. Negotiations are underway for the trilogy to be re-released to coincide with the launch of the television series in fall 2003 on TELETOON in Canada.

Oscar-nominated animation short THE CHUBBCHUBBS can be downloaded for free via the Oscar Showcase on Movielink (www.movielink.com). This is the first time the film has been available online for a secure download. THE CHUBBCHUBBS is the first digitally animated short film produced by Sony Pictures Imageworks, which debuted in theaters, paired with the MEN IN BLACK 2 release and was included on the MIBII DVD. Movielink, the online movie download service, is offering the free, legal download of THE CHUBBCHUBBS to promote its Oscar Showcase section where users can rent and download previous Academy Award-winning and nominated films, such as BRAVEHEART, AS GOOD AS IT GETS, JERRY MAGUIRE, PHILADELPHIA, PLATOON, ERIN BROCKOVICH and others. After downloading movies from Movielink, customers can store movies for up to 30 days for a fee ranging from $2.95 to $4.99. ABC Loses Marketing Maven

Veteran marketing exec Steve Sohmer has left the ABC network as its EVP of marketing, advertising and promotion according to the HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. No replacement has been announced and the executives in each department will report for now to ABC Entertainment Group chairman Lloyd Braun. The network declined to comment on his departure. Sohmer was hired last summer to promote ABC's fall schedule, including his successful campaign for new sitcoms like 8 SIMPLE RULES FOR DATING MY TEENAGE DAUGHTER.

RAI Reaches Consensus On New President And Board Members

Upheavals at RAI have been resolved for the time being with the appointment of Paolo Mieli, head of publisher Rizzoli-Corriere della Sera, as president of Italy's pubcaster, along with four new board members, according to VARIETY. Mieli, a journalist and author of books tracing the history of Italy's leftist politics, replaces Antonio Baldassarre. Baldassarre and RAI board member Ettore Albertoni submitted their resignations in response to government pressure on February 26, 2003.

Editor Robert Pennington joins Northern Lights Post's roster of talent at the company's recently launched visual effects/design division. Pennington recently finished editing two feature length independent films, THE LIFE AND TIMES OF ROBERT WILSON (working title), a documentary about the famed experimental theater director, and A TALE OF TWO PIZZAS, a romantic comedy directed by Vincent Sassone starring Vincent Pastore, Frank Vincent and Patty D'Arbanville. Pennington's recent commercial assignments include a montage-driven, two-spot image campaign for Ford Motor Co.

BRINGING DOWN THE HOUSE from Buena Vista brought in an exceptionally big weekend box office debut for the month of March in North America. Taking in roughly $31.7M, it was the third best ever debut in March, behind 20th Century Fox's ICE AGE ($46.3) and New Line's BLADE 2 ($32.5M). TEARS OF THE SUN, with visual effects by ILM, debuted in second place with $17.2M while OLD SCHOOL, vfx by Gray Matter FX, slipped a notch to third place at $9.2M and a cue of $50.8.

Egmont Product & President Palmed Off To Telescreen

Restructuring continues at Egmont Imagination as its president Tom van Waveren follows the company's programming catalog to Telescreen. The Egmont Group sold the media exploitation rights, outside of the Nordic territories, to Palm Plus Multimedia BV, which in turn has handed over the rights to its subsidiary Telescreen, a stable animation player for the past 20 years. The extended Telescreen catalog will now include properties such as LIZZIE MCGUIRE, PAZ, THE FAIRYTALER, HAMILTON MATTRESS, REX THE RUNT, TRACY MCBEAN, SKIPPER & SKEETO and UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS BEAR.
