Big Broadcasters Adopt Newcomer's The Koala Brothers

The Disney Channel U.S. is the latest in a raft of major broadcasters to prebuy THE KOALA BROTHERS, the first project from a new production house, Spellbound Entertainment. London-based Spellbound was launched in 2002 by the ex-HIT executive, Peter Curtis and ex-Endemol executive, Nick Barrington. Produced by Famous Flying Films for Spellbound, the stop-frame model animation series follows the adventures of Frank and Buster, two koalas on a mission to help others in need in the Australian outback.

Winners Found Jumping Teams At Technical Oscars

It seems many of the winners at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences 2002 Scientific and Technical Awards are jumping onto other teams. The first Oscars of the season were given out, three weeks before the televised Oscar ceremony on Saturday, March 1, 2003 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills.

Lucky 7 Films To Screen at Cartoon Movie 2003

Seven films have been selected to screen at the 5th edition of Cartoon Movie to be held March 13-15, 2003, in Potsdam, Germany. Organized by the European Association Cartoon in collaboration with NFP Teleart in Germany with the support of the Media Programme of the European Union and Berlin-Brandenburg Filmboard, Cartoon Movie offers attending investors, producers and distributors a complete overview of European animation feature films at different stages of production.

Young Makes VFX Producer At R!OT

R!OT Santa Monica has promoted Diana Young from associate producer to visual effects producer for commercials and music videos. Young, a 10-year post-production vet, joined R!OT in 1999. Previously she worked at 525 Post Production, the Post Group in Hollywood and Pascal Video. Her credits at R!OT include spots for Skittles, Hamburger Helper, Suzuki and Skyy Blue and she co-produced a two-minute montage that kicked off THE X-FILES final season.

VFX & Animation Shorts Welcome In Australian Fest

Based upon the reception of the AEAF Awards in Sydney last December, organizers of the Australian Effects & Animation Festival (AEAF) have introduced a Short Film Festival May 12-13, 2003 in Melbourne at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Federation Square. The shorts festival will showcase some of the best digital and animated material submitted to the AEAF Awards 2002, as well as some new material. Jim Rygiel/VFX supervisor on the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy is one of the featured speakers. Entries on Pal VHS are due no later than Friday, April 18, 2003.

Cradle Chops To Top Of Box Office

Warner Bros.' hip hop King Fu actioner CRADLE 2 THE GRAVE (Bryan Hirota was vfx supervisor) debuted at the top of the weekend box office in North America, taking in $17.1M, followed by OLD SCHOOL, vfx by Gray Matter FX, holding at second place at $13.8M and a cume of $37.2M. DAREDEVIL, with primary vfx by Rhythm & Hues, Pixel Magic and Digital Domain, dropped to third pulling in an estimated gross of $11M, and a total of $84.1M. HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS, with visual effects by Pixel Magic, dropped to fourth place taking in $10.1M and a $77.5M total.

New Space Division Takes Double Spots In Southern California

To cover a wider base and lessen potential clients' commutes, Space Division, a new creative editorial and design company has opened offices in Santa Ana and Santa Monica, California. Space Division provides creative editorial, design and finishing for commercials, music videos, feature film and television. Soup2Nuts' Hey Monie Pays First Visit To Black Network

HEY MONIE will reach a new audience as the series produced by Soup2Nuts debuts as the first animated comedy on BET (Black Entertainment Television) Tuesday, March 4 at 8 pm. The first network animated series based on an African-American woman and her friends started as a short on Oxygen's X-CHROMOSOME. Oxygen has been airing it as a series of shorts and has partnered up with BET and Soup2Nuts to turn it into a half-hour program. Oxygen will also be airing the shows in summer 2003.

Driver Changes Lanes From Game To Big Screen

Constantin Film in Germany is driving the latest game-to-screen crossover, optioning the film and television rights to Infogrames' DRIVER video game franchise. Impact Pictures, a subsidiary of Constantin, is slated to start shooting the motion picture later this year. "This is a great opportunity to develop the extremely cool game character of Tanner into a very believable and iconic action movie hero," said Jeremy Bolt, the movie's producer. Tanner is an undercover policeman hired by the mob as a getaway driver. Bolt set up Impact Pictures with writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson.

It's Blue Skies For Wedge At Fox In 5-Year Deal

Director Chris Wedge is on fire, signing a five-year, multipicture exclusive deal with 20th Century Fox that includes a potential ICE AGE sequel and a new film ROBOTS, it was announced Thursday by Chris Meledandri, president of Twentieth Century Fox Animation. Wedge is also receiving the first ever Animation Director of the Year Award at ShoWest during a gala Tuesday, March 6 in Las Vegas, Nevada and is nominated for an Oscar.

Scooby Hunts Down Under Vampire

Scooby-Doo and his famous gang of mystery-solving sleuths are on the trail of a Australian vampire in SCOOBY-DOO AND THE LEGEND OF THE VAMPIRE released on DVD and home video on Tuesday, March 4, 2003 by Warner Home Video. The direct-to-video 80-minute feature was produced by Warner Bros. Animation. On vacation in Australia, Scooby-Doo and the Mystery Inc. gang attend a music festival held at Vampire Rock. But the music goes flat when the gang learns that a legendary Australian creature called the Yowie Yahoo is kidnapping the musical acts and turning them into vampires.

FOX Kids Europe Counts Weigold In

Martin Weigold, CFO of Fox Kids Europe, will remain seated in his position for another two years in the game of musical chairs underway at the broadcaster ever since the Walt Disney Company bought a majority interest in FKE. Weigold has been with FKE since 1999. Previously Weigold was VP of finance at Walt Disney TV Int'l and served on the board of Super RTL, the German free-to-air broadcaster.

Boy Bests Girl In Consolidated Mattel Entertainment Unit

Mattel is consolidating its girls and boys/entertainment business units into one divison renamed Mattel Brands. The new global group includes the Barbie and Hot Wheels mega brands. Chairman/CEO of Mattel Robert Eckert said the move to reduce redundancies was consistent with "our 'one Mattel' approach to doing business," he said. Former boys/entertainment division president Matt Bousquette is promoted to president of Mattel Brands, with the elimination of approximately 5% of the executive level positions, with Adrienne Fontanella exiting as president of the girls division.

Little Mouse Gets 2D Series On HBO

STUART LITTLE premieres on HBO Family in an all-new 2D animated series Saturday, March 1 at 8:00 am and replays at 1:30 the same day, as well as on the following Tuesdays and Thursdays. Sony Pictures Television and Red Wagon are producing the half-hour series of 13 episodes, based upon the book by E.B. White. The series features the adventures of the three-inch tall mouse (voiced by Hugh Laurie) who has been adopted by the Little family. Other characters featured in the series are Stuart's brother George; Mr. and Mrs.

Pickard Picks Granada Kids Exec For ITV

Steven Andrew has been chosen to replace exiting controller of children's and youth programming Janie Grace at ITV. He will report to ITV director of programs, Nigel Pickard. Andrew spent five years at Granada Kids, one of the largest producers of kids programming in the U.K., and was responsible for many programs broadcast on CiTV (the children's segment of ITV). This is Pickard's first appointment since he rejoined the British broadcaster after a recent stint at the BBC.

CG Ted to Star In New Nick Movie

SHREK producer John Williams and his company Vanguard Films will produce a live-action theatrical adaptation of children's book TED for Nickelodeon Movies, starring a CG-animated version of the lead character. Ted is the mischievous imaginary friend of a young boy in the book of the same name by best-selling author/illustrator Tony DiTerlizzi. Rob Moreland (HAPPILY EVER AFTER) is adapting TED for Vanguard and Greenlight Media. TED will be rendered entirely in CG amongst a live-action cast and environment.

Wildcat Gets PCI Express

3Dlabs is adding PCI Express to its Wildcat graphics accelerators to help users take advantage of the improved CPU processing power and interconnect bandwidth of the new industry interconnect standard. "PCI Express is enabling us to design VPUs [visual processor units] that complement the enhanced system capabilities to raise the bar for workstation productivity," said Neil Trevett, SVP of market development for 3Dlabs. He said his company will be working closely with Intel on its PCI Express enabled adapters.

RAI Rumblings As President Resigns

The shakeup continues at Italian state broadcaster RAI with its president Antonio Baldassarre stepping down in response to government pressure. Baldassarre and RAI board member Ettore Albertoni submitted their resignations to Italy's lower and upper houses on February 26. Deputy Prime Minister Gianfranco Fini has been spearheading the move to remove RAI's top executives, especially after they decided to move one of RAI's channels, RAI2, to Milan without government approval.

Training Gets Animated

The hot buzz at the Training Conference and Expo February 22-27, 2003 in Atlantas Georgia World Congress Center (www.trainingconference.com) was about graphics and animation, especially Flash (Macromedia had a monster presence at the show, as did Adobe). The huge show, which serves the nations $100-billion-plus training industry, featured seminars on using animation, gaming and simulation to train corporate executives, managers and sales forces more effectively than by traditional boring text-based training generated with tools such as Microsoft Word PowerPoint.
