The Business of Animation

Where do studios find work?

Hi, We're just in the process of setting up an animation studio. It's come to our attention that we don't actually know how animation studios get their 'contracts'. I guess when you get more known, you will be contacted by companies wanting your services. Before that though whats the methods to get some money? Struggling to find information on this at the moment. Contacting other studios has resulted in no information, i guess its pretty sensitive information!

Animation Collaboration Required

Big Giggles a highly creative development company for childrens tv currently have projects ready to go to the next stage of animation with worldwide toy license deals already on the table! Licensing is where the real money is!

We are looking to 'tie in' with an animation company with a view to collaborating and becoming a major force in the children's entertainment industry.

Big Giggles have 'big players' in the industry ready to represent our properties worldwide.

Working overseas?

By rigel496 | Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at 2:40pm

I’ve been very interested in working overseas. I never had the opportunity to travel while growing up and now that I am graduating Calarts character animation (In California, USA), I would like to work in another country.

Right now I only speak English, but I would be more than happy to study up a new language. I’ve been looking at India, and South Korea, mostly, but also there seems to be many good studios in Eastern Europe, China, Australia and Brazil. I have a hard time finding out how to apply for overseas studios, and am not sure how all of the visa information works.

Freelance 2D Animation

So I’m reeeally confused about what I’m supposed to be charging as a fair rate for freelance 2D animation. I’ve Googled many times, gone to the Animation Guild’s wage report (which one should I be comparing myself to? I'm not a studio), and looked in AIGA’s pricing and ethical guidelines book, and still have no clue if my prices are in the right range. I keep seeing the answer of “figure out what you NEED or WANT to charge in order to function....” etc. but that doesn’t really help me. I want to make a lot, obviously. But you can’t always justify that to clients.

Do Batman animated features make money?

By DisneyFan | Sunday, January 2, 2011 at 6:54pm

I'm a Batman fan, and I just checked out the Wikipaedia entry for Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. The budget was $6 million and the gross revenue is just over $5.6 million. That's not so good.

The Wiki entry for the other Batman cartoons don't say anything about cost, but the sales are in the millions.

Any comments on this? I'd presume Warner Brothers would never continue a series unless it made money.

Angelo -india's first open movie under Production

Following the overwhelming success of Blender Open Movie project, Sintel, a small team of 15 creative professionals from India have taken their first step to create an open movie named “Angelo” – which is the India’s First Open Movie under production. Located at South Indian Business capital Chennai, the team is from the animation campus of Perspect-V Media Ventures Pvt. Ltd.

The movie which would use only open source methodology and software like Blender in the lead is proceeding in a considerable pace and is expected to be released worldwide in the early August of 2011.

Commercial Animation Costs?

Hi! I was hoping some informed people could answer some questions I have about the business end of animation. I have been searching the internet for answers and just can't find the info I need. So what I am interested in is, is there any sort of average amount that an animation studio would charge for making a 30 second tv commercial that is part animation part archival footage? Should it be an hourly rate and if so what's fair?

Internships if you're a few years outta school?

I graduated a number of years ago (within the decade!) with a BFA; my major was 2D animation. Right out of college though, I worked as an illustrator, peppered with several stints in the glorious food service industry. I sort of, like a lot of 20-somethings, lost my way for a little bit.

Not anymore. My portfolio is beefing up but the one thing that I bemoan is that I have not worked in a studio yet, outside of a few short freelance gigs.
