Activision Ships Over 2M Units of Spider-Man 2 Game

Activision's North American Publishing unit has shipped more than two million units of its SPIDER-MAN 2 videogame timed to the theatrical release of the feature film. The game lets players experience what it's like to be Spider-Man as they web sling from buildings, dive from rooftops to the streets and scale the heights of Manhattan. Players will be able to engage in various missions inspired by the action of the film. The game is available for PlayStation 2, Xbox, Nintendo GameCube, Game Boy Advance and PC.

Game Developer's Competition Announces Winners

Linden Lab, creator of the acclaimed 3D online world SECOND LIFE, announced the winners of the first annual Game Developer's Competition. Harvey Smith, formerly of Ion Storm and the lead designer of the award winning DEUS EX, and project director of DEUS EX: INVISIBLE WAR, judged the competition and spent time with each team evaluating their design and game play choices.

Art Institute of Phoenix Intros Degree in Visual & Game Programming

The Art Institute of Phoenix (TAIP) is now offering a new bachelor's degree program in Visual & Game Programming designed to prepare upcoming technical artists for the videogame and animation industries.

Students receive intensive training in the foundations of art and design before entering into the more technical areas of programming for 3D animation. Sky Captain Spawns Free Air Combat Challenge

Beginning June 25, 2004, contestants can register on the SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW site (www.SkyCaptain.com) to register and download the AIR COMBAT CHALLENGE, courtesy of Paramount Pictures and Blitz DS Games. The free, downloadable game, based on SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW (to be released Sept. 17), puts players in the cockpit as members of aviator Joseph Sullivan's (Sky Captain, played by Jude Law) Flying Legion. Players will take control of their own fast and agile P-40 Warhawks to defend the world against the mysterious Totenkopf and his mechanical monsters.

Pilots will have five weeks to perfect their skills and on Aug. 2, the AIR COMBAT CHALLENGE tournament begins. The three-week contest will pit contestants against one another for a chance to win an all-inclusive trip to the London premiere of SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW in October.

Vivendi Universal Game for Robot

Vivendi Universal Games has announced that ROBOTS is currently in development by Eurocom Entertainment Software for a first quarter 2005 launch to coincide with the theatrical release of the Blue Sky-produced ROBOTS film. The game will be on the PlayStation 2, Xbox and PC. Based upon Twentieth Century Fox's CG animated feature film releasing on March 11, 2005 -- directed by Academy Award-winner Chris Wedge -- the game will place players in the role of the film's hero Rodney Copperbottom.

Spider-Man in Abundance on DVD

With SPIDER-MAN 2 coming to theaters June 30, 2004, Columbia TriStar Home Ent. is naturally plugging Spidey on DVD as well, reissuing SPIDER-MAN in a three-disc deluxe edition ($24.95) with a few new extras aimed at promoting the sequel, along with a superior quality SPIDER-MAN Superbit disc ($26.96).

Turbo Squid, worldwide publisher for the Discreet Certified 3ds max Plug-in Program, has released the first two TURBO TOYBOX 3D content packs. Each TURBO TOYBOX contains 30 or more 3D models for gamers to use in customizing their favorite games created with Discreet's gmax. Atari & Zombie Complete Development on Shadow Ops: Red Mercury

Atari and Zombie Inc. have announced the completion of development on SHADOW OPS: RED MERCURY, the highly anticipated action game for the Xbox. In the game, players control Frank Hayden, a special forces operative hand picked to track down and destroy the stolen "Red Mercury," a secret substance that threatens the world with nuclear annihilation. The title is expected to be available in North America on June 15, 2004 and in Europe on June 18.

EA Announces Ultima Online 7th Anniversary Edition

Electronic Arts has announced the ULTIMA ONLINE 7th Anniversary Edition, commemorating the game's historic seven-year run. The special version of the longest-running online game is in development and scheduled for release this summer.

Activision Gets Spider-Man 3 Game Deal

Activision Inc. has announced that, through a licensing agreement with Spider-Man Merchandising (a 50/50 limited partnership comprised of Marvel Enterprises Inc. and Sony Pictures Consumer Products Inc.), the company will develop and publish videogames based on the 2007 feature film SPIDER-MAN 3. Activision is currently developing console and PC games based on SPIDER-MAN 2 that are scheduled for release in North America timed to the film's launch on June 30, 2004.

E3 News: Survey Finds Americans Playing More Games, Watching Movies & TV Less

Participants and attendees at E3 are obviously in the right game as a new survey reveals that computer and videogames are capturing increasing amounts of Americans' leisure time at the expense of television and movies.

The data from the Entertainment Software Assoc. (ESA) annual consumer survey shows 52% of gamers who are spending more time playing games report watching less television and, as a result, 47% go to movies less, and 41% watch movies at home less often.

E3 News: HumanIK|Middleware Licensed for Splinter Cell 3 Game

Kaydara announced that Ubisoft has licensed HumanIK|Middleware, an advanced in-game character animation and rigging library, for its upcoming release of TOM CLANCY'S SPLINTER CELL 3 (working title). With HumanIK|Middleware, Ubisoft will be able to easily embed the same award-winning character animation and rigging technology found in MOTIONBUILDER directly into its game engine. Ubisoft is demonstrating SPLINTER CELL 3 using HumanIK|Middleware at E3, May 12-15, 2004, booth #1046.

Buena Vista Plans Chicken Little & Narnia Games

Buena Vista Games has announced that it is developing a videogame based on Walt Disney Pictures' first fully animated 3D feature film, CHICKEN LITTLE and live-action epic CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE. The games will be published by Disney Interactive for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, handheld and PC platforms. The first CHICKEN LITTLE title is slated for debut in summer 2005 to coincide with the release of the film in theaters. The first NARNIA game will hits shelves in fall 2005.

Final Fantasy Game Gets DVD Sequel

In a unique move showing the increased fan following for videogame stories, Square Enix has announced that it will release a DVD sequel to its 1997 hit game, FINAL FANTASY VII, reports VARIETY. The CGI animated feature, FINAL FANTASY VII ADVENT CHILDREN, will continue the story of the game, which sold more than 9 million units worldwide. No release date has been set. The first move into film for this popular gaming franchise was the 2001 photoreal feature FINAL FANTASY, which was a disaster at the box office.
