The 2D adult animated Netflix series will contend against ‘The Simpsons’ and ‘Bob’s Burgers’ as the sole ‘drama’ nominee at the February 15 ceremony; ‘The Mandalorian’s Simon Kassianides joins the cast of the third and final season, which streams later this year.
The third and final season of 2D adult animated Netflix series Blood of Zeus, which has been nominated in the Animation category at the upcoming 2025 WGA Awards, will stream later this year. Breaking free from the domination of animated “comedy” projects, the series is the sole “drama” nominee and contends against The Simpsons and Bob’s Burgers.
Created by Greek-American storytellers Charley and Vlas Parlapanides, Blood of Zeus explores the rich world of Greek mythology through the lens of Heron, a demigod navigating a harrowing journey to save humanity from vengeful gods and fearsome demons.
With its morally ambiguous characters, mature themes, and intricate storytelling, the series stands in bold contrast to the comedic tone that has traditionally defined WGA’s Animation nominees.
The journey to getting the decidedly dramatic series on Netflix was a long one. “We had to prove there was an audience for a dramatic, action-driven animated series rooted in mythology,” said Vlas. “Fortunately, platforms like Netflix, Amazon and Disney have helped broaden the space, and the success of shows like ours, Castlevania, Invincible, and X-Men ’97 have helped pave the way.”
“For the record our show would not exist if not for the success of Castlevania,” added Charley. “But you have to remember this whole process for Blood Of Zeus began back in 2018 when they were still testing the waters to see if this would even work. I actually think it’s much, much harder now to do something like this.”
The series’ voice talent includes Derek Phillips as Heron; Jessica Henwick as Alexia; Elias Toufexis as Seraphim; Jason O’Mara as Zeus; Chris Diamantopoulos as Evios; Mamie Gummer as Electra; and Mathew Mercer as Hermes.
Speaking on the upcoming season’s cast, Charley shared exclusively that Simon Kassianides (The Mandalorian) has joined the cast as the voice of Orpheus.
Brad Graeber and Michael Hughes serve as executive producers alongside the Parlapanides brothers, with Jae H. Kim as supervising director. The animation is by Powerhouse.
The third and final season of Blood of Zeus is set to stream later this year on Netflix.
