Events: Competitive Festivals

Created in 1985, the Hiroshima Festival celebrates love & peace through the art of animation, basically held biennially, under the endorsement of ASIFA and according to its rules. Hiroshima is consisted of competition programs, special programs, seminars, workshops, exhibitions, etc.P>No category for competition, any animation shorts under 30 minutes and completed after the April of two years prior to the festival year are eligible. For the festival screening, the following formats are acceptable:

The Academy of Machinima Arts & Sciences (AMAS), an organization that provides advocacy, education and community building awareness for the entertainment medium known as Machinima: the art or technique of filmmaking using real-time 3D virtual environments, has teamed up with NVIDIA

The 5th Annual Crested Butte Reel Fest is a competitive short film festival located in the beautiful mountain resort town of Crested Butte, Colorado. The Reel Fest focuses on films under 40 minutes in the categories of Animation, comedy, drama, experimental and science fiction. Also documentaries under 60 minutes.

Deadlines: Regular entries by March 22, 2002. Student entries by May 10, 2002.

The Los Angeles Film Festival kicks off nine days of screenings this Friday, June 21, 2002, including the Los Angeles premiere of MISSING PERSONS, an independent feature length 3D animated film that tells the story of four lost souls in the 60th Precinct of Coney Island. The lives of a burnt-out detective, a rookie sergeant, an emancipated World War II Army surplus robot and a disfigured streetfighter intersect during the investigation of a mysterious man in this debut feature film from directors/animators/twin brothers Dan & Matt O'Donnell.

An event for writers and all who care about what writers do and how they do it. Over 175 panelists and speakers, including dozens of Academy and Emmy honored screenwriters and television writers, plus A-list directors, agents, producers and studio executives will gather at the Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City June 7 - 9 for three days of panel discussions, case studies, parties, a major screening, book signings, tips and tactics, networking - and lots of FUN.

The Academy of Art College presents its Animation Spring Show 2002.Festivities begin on May 23, 2002 with an Awards Presentation, Screening, and Gallery Exhibit. The Pre Show runs from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm with the Awards Ceremony starting at 6:30 pm. The Show will consist of works completed by Academy of Art College students in the fields of 3D Animation, 2D Animation, and Visual Effects. The Animation Spring Show is open to the public and runs from May 23rd to June 8th.

The Art Institute of Los Angeles is hosting an Earth Day-inspired art contest and special event featuring digital and traditional works of art from current Art Institute students and local-area high school students. Using an environmental theme to showcase their artistic talents, students will compete for prizes and accolades, learn about animation/design software packages and raise awareness of environmental issues.

Filmfest Dresden is an independent film festival with international and national competition categories as well as supporting events. It began a year before the opening of the Berlin Wall. Due to its screening of rarely shown films, it has developed over the years into an internationally recognized short film festival, especially in the field of animation.
