Honami Yano awarded the Grand Prize for animated short; Cesar Cabral awarded Grand Prize for animated feature as the 45^th annual Ottawa International Animation Festival concludes.

A virtual awards ceremony honored a multi-national list of films including ‘Fresh Breeze’ by Gabriella Coumau, Alyx Ecalle, Saliha Sittler and Constantin Rytz; ‘Love is Just a Death Away’ by Bára Anna Stejskalová; ‘Angakusajaujuq: The Shaman’s Apprentice’ by Zacharias Kunuk; and ‘Üks imeline mees’ (‘A Most Exquisite Man’) by Jonas Taul.

Films are now being accepted for competition in five categories – International Competition, Young Animation, Tricks for Kids, Trickstar Nature Award, and AniMovie; submission deadline is December 1.

Get a glimpse of what’s in store at the upcoming virtual event set for September 22 – October 3; in addition to a host of screenings, sessions will include a discussion about WIA Vancouver’s ACE Program, an introduction to the Black Write Talent Incubator, and a conversation with storyboard artists José Pou and Bradley Cayford.

Taking place this November in Hangzhou, China, IAF looks at ‘Chinese Independent Animation in the 21st Century;’ submissions are now open for international animated films, research papers, and proposals focused on Chinese animation; entries must be received by September 30.

Confirmed presenters include Tom McGrath, director of ‘The Boss Baby: Family Business;’ ‘The Willoughbys’ director Kris Pearn; and legendary animator and VFX supervisor Phil Tippett; conference runs October 17-22 in Turin, Italy and online.

Submissions due by July 20 for the 11th International Animation Festival of Pernambuco in Brazil coming October 8-17; event will be held in person and online.

The upcoming festival reveals special retrospectives on animators Mariusz Wilczyński and Jodie Mack; the 2021 Ottawa International Animation Festival runs online September 22 - October 3.

Festival’s 2021 theme of ‘isolation’ reflects challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting solitude and claustrophobia; hybrid event runs in-person and online July 23-30.

AIF is back this Fall as a hybrid on-site / virtual festival after 2020 was canceled due to the pandemic; produced by GKIDS in partnership with the Annecy Festival, event embraces the highest aspirations of animation as a cinematic art form.

Films include Oscar-nominated ‘Wolfwalkers,’ ‘Archipel’ by Canadian director Félix Dufour-Laperrière, and ‘Elulu’ by Chilean artist Gabriel Verdugo Soto, showcasing an array of styles and techniques.
