Universal Studios Hollywood Opens Van Helsing Attraction

Universal Studios Hollywood has announced the debut of "Van Helsing: Fortress Dracula," an all-new attraction inspired by Universal Pictures' VAN HELSING opening simultaneously with the film's nationwide debut on May 7, 2004. The attraction will transport guests to a world inhabited by Dracula, The Frankenstein Monster and The Wolf Man. The attraction will feature special effects as well as hundreds of artifacts, original props and set pieces, created for the movie.

IMAX Opens Theater in China

IMAX Corporation's co-chair/ co-ceo Richard L. Gelfond has announced the official opening of the first commercially-operated IMAX theatre in China. The IMAX Theatre at Peace Cinema will be operated by Shanghai Evershining IMAX Theatre Co. Ltd. and Shanghai United Cinema Line Co. Ltd. Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment's APOLLO 13 will mark its first exhibition in China at the new theater.

IMAX & Daytona USA to Open IMAX Theatre at Daytona

IMAX Corp. has signed an agreement with Daytona USA, the official attraction of NASCAR, to open a new IMAX 3D theatre alongside the Daytona International Speedway. Scheduled to open in April 2004, the theater will premiere the Warner Bros. Pictures first IMAX 3D film, NASCAR 3D: THE IMAX EXPERIENCE.

Nanyang Polytechnic Students Provide Toons for Trains

Starting on February 12, 2004, a total of 27 animated shorts from Nanyang Polytechnic students will air on MRT trains in Singapore, reports CHANNEL NEWS ASIA. Nanyang Polytechnic partner TV Mobile put the deal together.

Kim Wong-Nathan, programming director of TV Mobile at MediaCorp, said, "Our average commuting time is about 26 minutes and these animations comes in fun short bites, and it's actually refreshing and entertaining for our TV commuters, and for people on the move."

Academy's New Theater Named for VFX Pioneer Dunn

It's fitting that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has named its newest theater, a 286-seat state-of-the-art screening room at the Pickford Center in Hollywood, in honor of optical, vfx pioneer Linwood Dunn.

"Linwood Dunn was a giant in the motion picture field, a gifted artist and scientist who made enormous contributions to our art form throughout most of the 20th century," said Academy president Frank Pierson. "Naming the theater in Lin's honor made eminent sense to the board of governors."

Disney World Debuts 3D Mickey and Friends

Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida, recently unveiled MICKEY'S PHILHARMAGIC, a new 3D film presented by Kodak starring Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and other favorite Disney characters. It marks the first attraction to feature the beloved Disney characters in computer animation. Set in Fantasyland Concert Hall, the musical experience unfolds on one of the largest - if not the largest -- seamless screen ever created for a three-dimensional film: a 150-foot-wide canvas. Visual effects house Guava has been enlisted by Radio City Entertainment to bring legendary singer/actor Frank Sinatra back to the Radio City Music hall stage in a multi-media event entitled SINATRA: HIS VOICE. HIS WORLD. HIS WAY. This project is the first time that Sinatra Enterprises has approved the exclusive and unrestricted use of Sinatra footage to a single entity outside the family. Perception Designs Kiosk Display For National Constitution Center

Design/post-production house Perception has delivered kiosk display sequences for the National Constitution Center (www.constitutioncenter.org), which opened its doors in Philadelphia July 4, 2003. For the seven 10-second animation sequences, Perception teamed with director Hock Films Jonathan Hock, who recently collaborated with Perception on the show opens to ESPN's STREETBALL and BLOCK PARTY. The permanent exhibit, entitled "Point Counterpoint," presents short films featuring actors arguing both sides of some of the influential teachings of American history and culture.

King Features, the rights holder to many classic characters like Popeye, has hired DMA Animation to bring Betty Boop to a new line of video slot machines. The machines are being scripted by Top Gun Gaming and manufactured under a licensing agreement with Las Vegas-based Bally Gaming and Systems. The new BETTY BOOP game starts off with images of Betty in her dressing room, asking players to help her pick her next movie role. She points to three posters on the wall that illustrate her choices - Circus Extravaganza, Daredevil Betty or Game Show Sweetheart.

Veggietales Gets Its Own Touring Stage Show

Big Ideas Productions has entered a two-year worldwide agreement with Clear Channel Entertainment to produce a new stage version of its upcoming CGI feature JONAH -- A VEGGIETALES MOVIE. Both the theatrical film and stage show are set to debut in 2002. The touring show will launch in February at Minneapolis' State Theater. Iwerks Brings 3D/4D FX Theatre To Beijing, China

Iwerks Entertainment has opened a new Iwerks 3D/4D FX Theatre at Xidan Cultural Plaza in Beijing, China. The new multimedia attraction showcases PIRATES, a 3D attraction film from the Iwerks film library, enhanced with in-theater special effects. This is the second Iwerks 3D/4D FX Theatre installed in China. The first opened in Shenzen in 2000. Don Iwerks, co-founder and chairman of Iwerks Entertainment, said, "Only one year later, we've installed the second in Beijing and another is slated to open in Shanghai later this year.

Shrek Live Comes to Universal Studios Hollywood

Universal Studios Hollywood has launched a live, interactive musical and comedy adventure, based on the new DreamWorks computer-animated feature SHREK. Shrek Live is scheduled for weekend performances through June 16, 2001, followed by daily performances through Labor Day weekend. Set on a renaissance faire-themed stage, the 20-minute live performance, which includes elaborately costumed SHREK characters, invites guests to participate as one of many popular fairy tale characters, including the THREE LITTLE PIGS and SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARVES.

Sing-Along Poppins Released In Theatre

Walt Disney will be releasing a sing along version of Walt Disney's Academy Award-winning classic MARY POPPINS. At Disneys El Capitan in Hollywood, a restored 35mm Dolby Stereo print of the classic 1964 film will feature on-screen lyrics of all the songs so that audiences can join in. Now the KANSAS CITY STAR reports that the Walt Disney heirs have pledged funds to refurbish the original animation studio of Walt Disney.
