‘The Tiniest Man in the World’ and ‘Decorado’ are win in the series and short film categories in the inaugural edition of the awards recognizing achievement in Ibero-American animation.
SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, SPAIN -- Feature films, series and short films from Mexico, Argentina, Spain, Chile and Brazil were winners at the inaugural Quirino Awards for Ibero-American Animation, held April 7 at the Tenerife Auditorium Adán Martín.
The Mexican feature Ana & Bruno directed by Carlos Carrera was recognized as best film. The film is the return of Carrera to animation in long format after his debut in 1994 with the short film El héroe, which won the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. After its world premiere at the Annecy Festival in 2017, the film will have its commercial release in Mexican theaters next August.
In the best series category, the prize went to The Tiniest Man in the World, a stop-motion production by renowned Argentinean animator Juan Pablo Zaramella that presents in chapters of one minute the adventures that the smallest man in the world experiences in daily life.
Spanish director Alberto Vázquez won the best short film award for Decorado. Produced in 2D, this is the third short film by Vázquez, who previously directed Birdboy and Sangre de unicornio and in 2015 made the leap to feature films with Birdboy, The Forgotten Children.

- Best Commissioned Film: Cantar con sentido, una biografía de Violeta Parra, Leonardo Beltrán (Chile). Production: Plastivida and Niño Viejo.
- Best Innovated Work: The Many Pieces of Mr. Coo, Nacho Rodríguez (España).
- Best Visual Development: Here’s the Plan, Fernanda Frick (Chile). Art direction: Fernanda Frick. Producción María José Barros.
- Best Animation Design: Caminho dos Gigantes, Alois Di Leo (Brasil). Animation directors: Tiago Rovida and Henrique Lobato. Production: Sinlogo Animation.
- Best Sound Design & Original Music: Tadeo Jones 2: el secreto del Rey Midas, Enrique Gato and David Alonso. Sound design: Oriol Tarragó. Original music: Zacarías M. de la Riva.
The international jury was composed of film historian Giannalberto Bendazzi, producer and distributor Eleanor Coleman of Indie Sales, producer and consultant Joan Lofts and the animators David Feiss and Raúl García.
The second edition of Quirino Awards Will take place in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in April 2019.
