Scooby-Doo Trivia

Some of you might already know this, but I thought I'd share because it totally caught me by surprise.

On the show Scooby-Doo: Where Are You?, both Scooby and Shaggy had longer full names. Scooby is Scoobert Doo, and Shaggy...Shaggy's name is Norville Rogers.

I might get beat up but consider it's likely never mentioned in the cartoon itself and I'm only 20. I think though, given my path, and having never come across that before with my life experience, it can't be too common of knowledge.

I didn't know Scoobs name, that's cool! I knew Shaggy's though. I heard H&B came up with the name Scooby Doo from one of Sinatra's songs. Even cooler! Scoobs a crooner! :D

Sure! What self-respecting parent names their kid "Shaggy"?;)
Was his real name mentioned in one of the live action movies?

As far as the actual show, at 8 years old it was for me the milestone marking the downhill drop in Saturday Morning cartoons....and I loved HB stuff at that age. I do think Scoob's popularity is based on nostalgia, exposure (always a new version of the show for years) and an appealing character design.

A no-prize for anyone who can name the working title of Scooby Doo Where Are You?.

Shaggy reminds me of another bone-idle layabout. Another no-prize for anyone who can tell me Jughead Jones' (from Archie) real name.

Since there weren't prizes and I didn't know, I looked them up and found

1) Mystery Five

2) Forsythe Pendleton "Jughead" Jones

For the record, this trivia merely fascinates me, and is in no way an endorsement of Scoobertian interests. And I'd rather eat my own right leg (and it's my favorite one) than watch either of the live-action movies...

 .....................2) Forsythe Pendleton "Jughead" Jones

......

You've bested me! I didn't know what the "P" in Forsythe P. Jones stood for.
I feel like Tim in Monty Python and the holy Grail after the question about swallows.

Hmmm, my uncles who all grew up in the sixties suggested that the original name of Scooby Doo was based on Scoobie "Doobie" and was some how drug related????!Im ean cmon, Shaggy? We all know what he "looks like" but hey- This could all be with "a wink, wink nudge, nudge know what I mean?"

Even at a very young age it allways bothered me that they used the same walk/run cycles and sound effects over and over and over allthough overall I enjoyed the cartoon.:p

Many years ago, a friend was trying to remember the names of the Banana Splits. She couldn't come up with all of them, so she called Hanna-Barbera. She no more got out the words "I have a weird question" when the receptionist rattled off Wilma Flintstone's maiden name, the name of the city the Jetsons lived in, and half a dozen other factoids. Then she asked "was any of those the answer?" I guess lots of people called the studio with questions like this - don't remember if Shaggy's real name was in there or not.

(Fleagle, Bingo, Drooper, and Snorky - in case you're wondering...)

ScatteredLogical's picture

Wilma's maiden name: Slaghoopal
Betty's full maiden name: Betty Jean McBricker

The Jetsons lived in Orbit City. (That took me a while)

An interesting Cogswell quote I found while looking this up:

"There's only one thing worse than war and that is business, and Spacely has declared business on us."

Every source I find has "Snorky" simply as Snork. Maybe only his posse called him Snorky

Banana Splits theme song (Tra La La):
written by Tony Powers & Ritchie Adams

One banana, two banana, three banana, four
Four bananas make a bunch and so do many more.
Over hill and highway the banana buggies go
Coming on to bring you the Banana Splits show

Making up a mess of fun,
Making up a mess of fun
Lots of fun for everyone

Tra la la, la la la la, tra la la, la la la la
Tra la la, la la la la, tra la la, la la la la

Four banana, three banana, two bananas, one
All bananas playing in the bright warm sun,
Flipping like a pancake, popping like a cork,
Fleagle, Bingo, Drooper and, Snork

Making up a mess of fun,
Making up a mess of fun
Lots of fun for everyone

Tra la la, la la la la, tra la la, la la la la
Tra la la, la la la la, tra la la, la la la la
(background singer - La-----aaah!)

Two Banana, four banana, one banana, three
Swinging like a bunch of monkeys hanging from a tree
Hey there everybody won't you come along and see
How much like Banana Splits everyone can be

Making up a mess of fun,
Making up a mess of fun
Lots of fun for everyone

Tra la la, la la la la, tra la la, la la la la
Tra la la, la la la la, tra la la, la la la la
Tra la la, la la la la, tra la la, la la la la

Ed, picturing you singing that song just dropped your "cool factor" down about 4 points.

That brings down my cool factor to -4.

Remember when Snorky returned one season and he was no longer wooly, he was a cute round elelphant.....I wonder what was behind that decision?
Was he too hippie for the network?
Actually I remember being introduced to his transformation watching a Kellogg's cereal commercial the Splits were in.

Remember when Snorky returned one season and he was no longer wooly, he was a cute round elelphant.....I wonder what was behind that decision?

The media at the time contributed Snort's change in appearance to his decision to clean up his life. After having several run-ins with the law on drug and prostitution related charges, Snort admitted himself into a rehab clinic and found God. It was said that after that point Snort had difficulties relating to the other members of the band; sadly marking the beginning of the end for the Banana Splits

They use "Snork" in the theme song (mostly 'cuz it rhymes with cork), but during the introductions in every episode, he was called Snorky.

Trust me, the 'Splits were an important part of my childhood. The part of the story I left out is when my friend mentioned what she had done, I rattled off the character names without missing a beat, after which she said "well if you'd come by earlier you could have saved me a toll call". ;)

Alright, that reminds me of a song which reminds me of another trivia question; this one was told to me:

What was the name of Gargamel's cat on the Smurfs?
