NFB Heats Up Hothouse 4

The National Film Board of Canada has launched the Hothouse 4 website at www.nfb.ca/hothouse, which includes a regular behind-the-scenes podcast series.

Hothouse is a NFB project that encourages new talent, provides an A-Z experience in professional animation filmmaking and re-imagines ways of making animation: ways that are faster, more flexible and that celebrate the shortest of short forms. Eight emerging filmmakers spend 12 weeks at the NFB Animation studios in Montreal to create 30-second films on the theme "A Chance Encounter."

CBS Cartoon Theater Producer Passes Away at 83

Michel M. Grilikhes -- producer of the first primetime cartoon series, CBS CARTOON THEATER -- died March 9, 2007, in Los Angeles of kidney failure, reports THE BIG CARTOON DATABASE. He was 83 years old.

CBS Cartoon Theater only aired one year -- 1956 -- and was hosted by Dick Van Dyke. The series was comprised mainly of Terrytoons. In some episodes, Van Dyke would interact with some of his cartoon guests.

VES Announces 2007 Board of Directors

The Visual Effects Society (VES) has elected 15 new members to its board of directors, and the new board has elected Jeffrey A. Okun to a one-year term as chair. He replaces outgoing chair Carl Rosendahl, who held the position for three years.

"Seeing the board pass the leadership role to Jeff is very appropriate," remarked exec director Erc Roth. "He's been personally involved in so many aspects of the VES' work and cares very deeply about our members. The VES will be in very good hands."

New 2D Goofy Short Coming from Disney

A new 2D Goofy short is among a list of four new shorts in development at Disney, it was reported in by THE NEW YORK TIMES.

HOW TO INSTALL YOUR HOME THEATER will return Goofy to the big screen in his popular "How To" shorts, which were popular in the '40s and '50s. The new short is set to start production early next year.
