Universal Nets Freaky Children’s Series

Universal has obtained the film rights to Darren Shan bestselling childrens book series, CIRQUE DU FREAK, reports VARIETY. Brian Helgeland is attached to write/ exec produce with Lauren Shuler Donner producing. Helgeland plans to base the first film on the first three books in the dozen-book series. Universal hopes this will be a new trilogy for them. The storys main character is named Darren Shan and follows him to an illegal freak show where he is lured into becoming a vampire's assistant in order to save his best friend's life.

Universal Releases Land Before Time: Invasion Of The Tinysauruses

Universal Studios Home Video will premiere THE LAND BEFORE TIME: INVASION OF THE TINYSAURUSES on DVD and video Jan. 11, 2005. Featuring the voice talent of Oscar nominee Michael Clarke Duncan (THE GREEN MILE) and Camryn Manheim (THE PRACTICE), the new direct-to-video marks the 11th installment of the most successful feature-length children's video franchise of all time. The DVD and VHS are priced at $19.98.

The story follows Littlefoot, Ducky, Cera, Spike and Petrie as they meet a herd of mysterious tiny dinosaurs.

Shark Tale Director Gets Unprofessional with Live-Action Script

SHARK TALE co-writer/co-director Rob Letterman has inked a deal with Universal to write his first live-action film, reports VARIETY. The film is titled THE UNPROFESSIONALS, a military comedy similar in tone to STRIPES. THE FAST AND FURIOUS producer Neal Moritz is in talks to produce. Universal production exec Scott Bernstein will shepherd the project.

Columbus Dives into Sub-Mariner

Universal Pictures has hired Chris Columbus to direct and produce the feature adaptation of Marvel Comics SUB-MARINER. Marvel Studios chairman-ceo Avi Arad and former Universal production president-turned-producer Kevin Misher will produce along with Columbus 1492 Prods. The films screenwriter David Self will serve as exec producer. Universal Pictures vice chair of worldwide production Mary Parent and vp of production Damien Saccani will shepherd the flick for the studio.

Van Helsing Scares Up $65 Million in Home Ent. Debut

Universal Studios Home Ent. announced that VAN HELSING scared up sales of more than four million combined DVD and VHS units in the first six days of release for a total consumer spree of $65 million.

USHE is poised for a record-breaking fourth quarter with a release schedule representing 36% of the domestic box office of all feature titles being released during that period.

Ubisoft to Create King Kong Game

Ubisoft and Universal Studios Consumer Products Group announced plans to release an interactive game based on Universal Pictures upcoming KING KONG, directed by Peter Jackson. The game will be available worldwide on all platforms at the beginning of the holiday season in conjunction with the Dec. 14, 2005 theatrical release of the movie.

King Kong Principal Photography Begins

Principal photography is set to begin in September on Peter Jacksons KING KONG. Jackson will shoot the epic action flick on location in his native New Zealand. Set to star in the Universal Pictures release is Academy Award nominee Naomi Watts (21 GRAMS), Golden Globe nominee Jack Black (SCHOOL OF ROCK) and Academy Award winner Adrien Brody (THE PIANIST).

Land Before Time Job Runs Out for Feola

Universal Worldwide Home Entertainment president Louis Feola is exiting after 26 years with the studio, reports DAILY VARIETY.

Feola has headed UWHE since it was established in 1998 as the umbrella division for the studio's specialty production units that develop and produce content for home video and animated TV series, including Universal Home Entertainment Prods. (UHEP), Universal Pictures Visual Programming (UPVP) and Universal Cartoon Studios.

Universal Acquires Shadowmancer

Universal Pictures has made it official; it has purchased the feature film rights to vicar G.P. Taylor bestseller SHADOWMANCER for a seven-digit sum, reports VARIETY. Fortitude Films originally bought the rights to the book in March for $1 million against $6.2 million for the book and will produce the film. Universal will cover Fortitude's original deal, which included 15% of merchandising. Fortitude's Steve Delaportas and Lisa Marie Butkiewicz will produce.

Universal Buys Rights to DC Graphic Novel The Psycho

Universal Pictures has secured the screen rights for the DC graphic novel THE PSYCHO, reports VARIETY. The studio has hired Jeffrey Nachmanoff (THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW) to pen the script. Based on a three-issue series by James Hudnall and Dan Brereton, the story is an action-thriller about a government agent who reveals a technology used to genetically transforms people into superhumans.

Big, Bad Wolf Feature Blows Into Wild Brain

Wild Brain has teamed up with Casey Silver Prods., to develop its feature version of the LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD take titled BIG, BAD WOLF, reports HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. The film is being financed through Casey Silver's discretionary fund with Universal. Mike Glock has been hired to pen the script, which will come from the wolf's point of view that he was framed. As part of the deal, Wild Brain may co-finance the film with Universal.

Universal Studios Hollywood Opens Van Helsing Attraction

Universal Studios Hollywood has announced the debut of "Van Helsing: Fortress Dracula," an all-new attraction inspired by Universal Pictures' VAN HELSING opening simultaneously with the film's nationwide debut on May 7, 2004. The attraction will transport guests to a world inhabited by Dracula, The Frankenstein Monster and The Wolf Man. The attraction will feature special effects as well as hundreds of artifacts, original props and set pieces, created for the movie.
