U.K.-based Shorts International, the short film distribution arm of Britshorts Ltd., has become the exclusive distributor for the entire short film library of American Vantage/Hypnotic. The 2005 Slamdance Film Festival (Jan. 21-28, 2005 in Park City, Utah) announced its lineup of short films, including a new animation jury competition and a short filmmaking challenge.
The I Castelli Animati Festival highlights animation in all its forms from commercials to features films. The international competition awards the following prizes: grand prize, special jury prize, best debut short film, best European short film, audience prize, Fabrizio Bellocchino prize, best Web animation and best non-narrative short film. Pendulum Studios has announced the creation of a Website for its new 3D-animated short film, ARREST ASSURED. The new Website, www.studiopendulum.com/arrestassured shows off concept art, still imagery, storyboards, evolutionary clips and making-of movies, including a short behind-the-scenes movie called ANATOMY OF SHOT, which shows the compositing construction of one of the shots from the film.

BBC Three is giving animators a chance to turn their animated short into a new television series. The network is looking for distinctive visual style, strong stories and appeal to BBC Three's 24- to 35-year-old audience. The overall winner will get their film screened on BBC Three and funding to develop a series of their animation.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will screen Technicolor cartoon POPEYE THE SAILOR MEETS SINDBAD THE SAILOR as part of its "Great To Be Nominated" series at its Samuel Goldwyn Theater at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, July 26, 2004. The Max Fleischer production received a Cartoon Short Subject nomination in 1936 and will be shown prior to the feature presentation of ANTHONY ADVERSE, the 1936 Best Picture nominee starring Frederic March and Olivia de Havilland.

Director Mark Osborne and Karen Dufilho-Rosen, producer of several Academy Award-winning animated short films, are partnering in Los Angeles to make THE BETTER HALF, a stop-motion animated short film, with a 2004/2005 Guggenheim Fellowship Osborne received to partially fund the making of the new short.
As part of Marin County Fair, the 34th Annual Marin County Festival of Short Film and Video is open to students and independent filmmakers, whose films are not commercially subsidized. Films 30 minutes or less must have been completed after January 1, 2003. Films entered in previous years may not be resubmitted. There will be up to $2,000 of prize money available to winners. The early deadline is March 19 for $30 ($35 Foreign) and the final deadline is April 16 for $35 ($40 Foreign).
