‘Time Flies, and ‘Chelita, Como Me Duele Quererte,’ though completely different films, share the concept of lost time; they also share the use of exciting new software, developed by SCAD alum Noah Catan, that enables 3D lighting effects on 2D animation.
Noah Catan and the team at Bent Image Labs used his Pantheon software tool to add critical volumetric shading to the key opening scenes of the film, set in Harold’s illustrated book world, without making the characters and their simple lines look like the came from a completely different world.
For Junior animation student Alexandra Young, jumping into Unreal Engine to direct the school’s latest animated film, having never worked in 3D, was at first like drinking water from a firehose; however, she and her team quickly and effectively embraced the powerful real-time animation platform to tell an epic fantasy story in ways they couldn’t have done otherwise.
Former visual effects student Noah Catan spent over a year working to improve upon the 2D ‘Klaus’ innovative 3D-styled lighting and shading in his development of Pantheon: Volumetric Lighting for 2D Animation software, created specifically for the production of SCAD Animation Studios’ CTA Emmy nominated animated short.
Running September 22-24, the festival will feature screenings, panel discussions, presentations, and talent from Hulu and Netflix, SCAD Alumni, as well as the debut of SCAD Atlanta’s new XR stage; passes are now on sale.
