Spiderman 2 Game Postponed

Activision, Inc. postponed the September 18, 2001 release of SPIDER-MAN 2 ENTER: ELECTRO for the PlayStation game console, which is set in New York City. While the environments in the game were not designed to depict specific buildings, the climax of the game takes place atop a skyscraper that loosely resembles the World Trade Center. Because of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 that destroyed the buildings, the company decided to alter the game slightly. The announcement was made by Ron Doornink, president and COO, of Activision, Inc.

3DO Ships Jumpgate

The 3DO Company shipped its new multiplayer online space simulation game JUMPGATE on September 26, 2001. 3DO recently concluded a free preview of the game during which thousands of new players earned their stripes exploring the extensive JUMPGATE universe, where three rival factions coexist in the galaxy and navigate through a network of spatial anomalies known as jumpgates. Players take up roles within the factions, trading goods, completing missions and fighting off enemies and their activities affect the course of the game.

Video Game Technologist RJ Mical Joins Fathammer

Video game veteran RJ Mical has joined Fathammer as chief architect. Mical assumes the responsibility for designing the software architecture and development interface for Fathammer's mobile game engine, X-Forge. He will oversee the integration of third-party components as well as serve as a company spokesman and technology evangelist. Prior to joining Fathammer, Mical was vice president of software engineering at Red Jade. Mical is also credited with co-inventing the Atari Lynx handheld video game system and co-architecting the 3DO entertainment console.

Microsoft To Include Discreet's Gmax In Dungeon Siege

Discreet and Microsoft have signed a second licensing agreement to create, publish and distribute Discreet gmax game packs in another title. The role-playing game DUNGEON SIEGE, developed by Gas Powered Games, is the next confirmed Microsoft game to include support for gmax software. The title is scheduled for delivery in 2002. gmax will allow users to create and modify their game content for unique and extended experiences. Discreet Unveils Gmax

At QuakeCon, the world's premier multi-player gaming event, Discreet unveiled gmax, the company's licensable game development platform and free consumer game-content editor. The consumer version of gmax will be available as a free download to gamers in fall 2001 and will come with 3D modeling, animation, texturing and character building tools. Discreet previously announced that elements of gmax will be bundled with MICROSOFT FLIGHT SIMULATOR 2002: PROFESSIONAL EDITION, shipping in Q3 this year.

THQ Inc. released its next generation game line-up for the 2001 holiday season. The titles include DARK SUMMIT, NEW LEGENDS and MX 2002 FEATURING RICKY CARMICHAEL for Xbox, RED FACTION for PC, and in conjunction with JAKKS Pacific Inc., WWF SMACKDOWN! CDV Taps UDS For New Xbox Game

Scandinavian computer game developer UDS has signed a deal with German publisher CDV to develop CORE, a new game for Microsoft's Xbox. The order is the largest in the company's history. CORE is a zany action adventure game where players control a team of four characters, all inside a giant robot suit, on a strange journey to save New York. The game is expected to be released worldwide during 2003. The title will be developed by UDS' studio in Gothenburg, western Sweden.

Doom Set To Debut On Game Boy Advance

id Software is bringing its classic shooter game, DOOM, to Game Boy Advance. The project is a joint development effort by id Software and David A. Palmer Productions. Published by Activision, Inc., DOOM for Game Boy Advance will allow gamers to battle horrific demons on the go. The handheld version features up-to-four-players support through the Game Boy Advance Game Link Cable. "DOOM redefined gaming on the PC and now it's back to change the way we think about mobile games," said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software.

Collision Acquires Rights To Video Game Max Payne

Los Angeles-based development and production company, Collision Entertainment, has acquired the film and television rights to MAX PAYNE, one of the most highly anticipated video game releases of the last several years, from game producer 3D Realms. Dimension Films will distribute the property in the U.S., with Abandon Entertainment handling international distribution. Max Payne is a DEA operative deep undercover, torn between avenging the mafia murders of his wife and child and being framed for the murder of a fellow agent.

Zona Creates Servers To Support 32,000 Concurrent Players

Zona, Inc., a massive multiplayer online game server solution provider, has announced that they has developed a new server engine called Terazona for online 3D games capable of supporting tens of thousands of users on a server. Terazona is capable of supporting a minimum of 32,000 concurrent users per server. Existing server loads can only support around 6,000 concurrent players. In addition, the servers contain fault tolerance, which prevents downgrade in game play experience within a growing base of concurrent users.

Activision Announces Record 1st Quarter Results

Activision, Inc. has announced record financial results for the first fiscal quarter ended June 30, 2001. Net revenues were US$110.6 million, 31% higher than last years net revenues of $84.6 million. Net income for the first fiscal quarter was $29,000 or a nominal amount per share, compared with a net loss of $5.2 million, or $0.21 loss per share, reported for the same period last year. The company also announced an increase in its fiscal year 2002 earnings per share forecast from $0.80 to $0.87.

Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. has announced that MAX PAYNE, the new action PC game from its GodGames publishing subsidiary, has shipped to retailers in North America and Europe. Discreet & Microsoft Brings Gmax To Flight Simulator

Discreet has signed a licensing agreement with Microsoft Corp. to create, publish and distribute gmax game packs for multiple Microsoft game titles. The first confirmed title is MICROSOFT FLIGHT SIMULATOR 2002: PROFESSIONAL EDITION, which is set for delivery in the third quarter of this year. With gmax and the FLIGHT SIMULATOR game pack loaded, users can import game content aircraft, buildings, trees and other 3D objects and customize those objects.

Disney Interactive has announced that the preview game DISNEYS ATLANTIS: THE LOST EMPIRESEARCH FOR THE JOURNAL, the online multi-player preview to their retail game, DISNEYS ATLANTIS: THE LOST EMPIRETRIAL BY FIRE, is now available free of charge. In the preview, players start their adventure in Iceland, 13 years before the retail game begins. Their mission is to search for and retrieve the Shepherds Journal, an ancient book said to reveal the secrets to finding the lost city of Atlantis.
