Using a range of visual styles, SK-II STUDIO’s 6-part anthology highlights real-life stories of the challenges faced by athletes including Simon Biles, Liu Xiang, and Ishikawa Kasumi; now streaming at SK-II CITY.
SK-II STUDIO has announced VS, their groundbreaking animated anthology series of six films that merge live-action and animation to tell real-life stories about female Olympic athletes, including gymnast Simone Biles; swimmer Liu Xiang; two-time Olympic medalist and table tennis player Ishikawa Kasumi; badminton duo and Olympic gold medalists Ayaka Takahashi and Misaki Matsutomo; surfer Mahina Maeda; and Japan’s women’s volleyball team Hinotori Nippon.
Each film features a unique visual style to explores the challenges and societal pressures these women have faced and overcome. The films use a highly stylized genre, kaijus (or “strange beast” in Japanese) to represent the challenges the women face as well as sci-fi, fantasy, action, and sports.
The animated film anthology was created in collaboration with an international group of award-winning studios including: Imaginary Forces, Passion Pictures, Platige Image, and C3. The soundtrack was done by popular singer-songwriters John Legend and Lexie Liu.
Along with the release of the VS Series, SK-II is also launching its first-ever virtual city – SK-II CITY – where visitors can binge-watch the VS Series in a virtual cineplex and take a backstage tour of the SK-II STUDIO to access exclusive behind-the-scenes content.
