Paramount’s TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON earned $37.2 million on its opening day Wednesday, making it the biggest opening day of 2011. Adding in the $5.5 million it made on Tuesday previews, the robot invasion flick has a cume of $42.7 million already. The film is also bucking the trend of lower numbers in 3-D.

At it's current pace the film is set to out gross the original TRANSFORMERS, but is falling short of the second, which took in $62 million on its first day. Estimates have DARK OF THE MOON taking in $155 to $170 million over the July 4th weekend.

The previous top opening day earner of the year was Disney’s PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES with a first-day haul of $34.8 million.
