The rumored series, set in 1980s Tokyo, chronicling the adventures of video game-loving twin brothers after an encounter with the Upside Down, has been teased by media outlet What’s on Netflix.
Rumor has it an anime spinoff series of Netflix mega-hit series Stranger Things, titled Stranger Things: Tokyo, which would run six hours total, is in development. This reveal comes from outlet What’s on Netflix, claiming the series logline is, “An encounter with the Upside Down evolves into a grand adventure for video game-loving twin brothers living on the outskirts of 1980s Tokyo.”
The alleged spinoff does have some traction, as Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer previously teased a series already in development that would be “1000% different” than the original series, “shorter and far quicker-paced,” and connected by “storytelling sensibility” and not familiar characters. A six-hour anime series set in Tokyo certainly would be a complete, yet exciting, deviation.
The Duffer brothers are also hard at work on a live-action adaptation of the beloved anime and manga series Death Note, which follows a teen who discovers a mysterious black notebook giving him supernatural power over life and death. The project is one of a few in development for Upside Down, the squeaky-clean new production company from the dream duo. Other ventures include an original series from creators Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance), The Talisman series, and the mysterious Stranger Things spin-off series.
Until an official announcement is made, fans can still look forward to the fifth and final Strange Things season, set to hit the streaming giant in 2024.
