‘Percebes,’ ‘Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass’ Lead MONSTRA 2025 Winners

Short film ‘Beautiful Men’ also took home a top prize at the Animation Festival’s 24th edition, which wrapped up last week.

The 24th edition of MONSTRA wrapped up last week, revealing a roundup of the event’s best films and dates for next year’s event.

Percebes by Alexandra Ramires and Laura Gonçalves won the Vasco Granja - SPA Grand Prize. In international feature films, Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass by the Quay brothers won the RTP Feature Film Grand Prix.

In the short films category, Beautiful Men by Nicolas Keppens won the Grand Prix Curtas - RTP. The film explores themes such as solidarity and insecurity in adulthood and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film. 

Estonian director Priit Pärn and Manuel Matos Barbosa, a member of CINANIMA's curatorial board, were honored with a Career Award.

The MONSTRA team also paid a surprise tribute to its artistic director and founder, Fernando Galrito, in an homage for his 25 years of work in promoting Portuguese animation around the world.

MONSTRA will return in 2026 from March 12 - 22, with Latvia as the new guest country.
