Move over Godzilla and Kong, a new supersized hero is coming to save the day (hopefully with much less property damage). Riding the ever-growing popular wave of manga and anime adapted into live-action film and TV, filmmaker Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island) is set to direct and produce a live-action film adaptation of the Gundam anime series for Legendary and Netflix. The series will join One Piece and Cowboy Bebop, two other wildly popular anime-to-live titles, on the streaming giant.
The Gundam series is set in the futuristic Universal Century, where independent human colonies fight space battles with the greater population of Earth via giant robots called “Mobile Suits.” The series launched an entire genre of “mecha anime,” which is still widely popular today.
While the new film’s plot has not been revealed, there is over 40 years of material to choose from: Yoshiyuki Tomino’s Mobile Suit Gundam first premiered as a TV series in 1979, which birthed an entire franchise. The screenplay will be penned by the legendary Brian K. Vaughn (Y: The Last Man), who will also executive produce.
