Animated feature debut directed by Sébastien Laudenbach and produced by France’s Les Films Sauvages opens in New York on July 21st and in Los Angeles on August 4th.
Independent animation distributor GKIDS has announced that the adult animated feature The Girl Without Hands (La Jeune fille sans mains) is set to open in New York on July 21st and in Los Angeles on August 4th.
A fairytale aimed at adult audiences and based on a story by the Brothers Grimm, The Girl Without Hands is directed by Sébastien Laudenbach from his own script and produced by French production company Les Films Sauvages. The story synopsis for the film reads, “In hard times, a miller sells his daughter to the Devil. Protected by her purity, she escapes from the Devil who, in revenge, deprives her of her hands.”
The Girl Without Hands premiered in the ACID section at Cannes, was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the César Awards, and won both the Jury Prize and the award for Best French Film at the Annecy Animation Festival in 2016 and was awarded the André-Martin Award for Best French Feature Film special prize at the 2017 Annecy International Animation Festival on June 16, 2017.
Laudenbach’s previous work includes the black sand-animated short Vasco, which screened as part of the Cannes Critics’ Week in 2010, and Journal, which won a Clermont-Ferrand Fest Youth Prize in 1998. Laudenbach was also the recipient of an Emilie Reynaud Prize in 2015 for Daphne ou la belle plante, which he co-directed with Sylvain Derosne.
