Pixar’s ‘Onward’ takes top spot in the worst Week 11 domestic box office since 1995; postponement of all new theatrical releases until at least April 10 means low numbers bound to continue.
As concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic grow, with governments expanding calls for closures of schools, restaurants, and theatres, entertainment studios around the world are either shutting down or asking staff to work from home. Governments at the local, state and national level are both asking and ordering citizens to remain home; the global war against the pandemic has taken a dramatic turn in the last few days, especially in the U.S.
With a huge number of people staying off the streets, the weekend box office took a drubbing; the top 10 U.S. films combined for only $50.35 million, the lowest gross for Week 11 films since 1995. In its second weekend of release, after a soft $40 million opening last weekend, Pixar’s Onward took in an estimated $10.5 million, a staggering 73% drop. It’s box office haul stands at $61 million domestic, $101.7 million global.
Universal’s The Invisible Man came in third, dropping only 60% to an estimated $5.85 million, for a cume of $64 million domestic / $122.7 million global. With a reported $7 million budget, the film seems reasonably profitable as it enters its third week of release.
