Box Office: ‘Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation’ Opens at No. 1

Latest Sony Pictures Animation ‘Hotel Transylvania’ franchise pic scares up $44 million in strong domestic debut.

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation showed the Sony Pictures Animation animated comedy franchise continues to mesmerize audiences, scaring up $44 million in its domestic theatrical debut. Adding in the film’s $54.8 international take brings its global box office haul to $100 million. The movie’s three-day opening beats the franchise’s inaugural film opening of $42.5 million back in 2012, though falls slightly short of the $48.5 million debut for 2015’s Hotel Transylvania 2. Despite stiff competition from the Disney – Pixar smash, Incredibles 2, which came in fourth with another $16.2 million for an “incredible” domestic cume of $535 million, the latest Genndy Tartakovsky-directed SPA feature shows audiences continue to be enjoy the crazy, cartoony antics of Drac, Mavis and their monstrous family ensemble.

With a foreign haul of $321 million, Incredibles 2 has so far generated $856 million in 31 days of release. The Brad Bird-directed sequel continues its amazing run, not only as the highest domestic grossing animated film of all-time, but the ninth-highest domestic grossing film of all-time.

By way of comparison, Oscar-winner The Incredibles, which opened in November 2004, finished its theatrical run with a $261 million domestic / $371 million foreign gross for a worldwide total of $633 million. The Oscar-winning Coco, Pixar’s critically acclaimed animated feature released last November, finished its theatrical run with a $209 million domestic / $597 million foreign gross for a worldwide total of $807 million.

Taking second spot this weekend with a $28.8 million gross was Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp, bringing its 10-day cume to $132 million domestic / $283 million worldwide. The 62% decrease represents the largest ever second weekend drop for a Marvel sequel.

Universal Pictures’s Dwayne Johnson action-thriller, Skyscraper, had a less than towering debut, generating only $25.4 million in its first weekend. Adding in a foreign take of $40 million brings the worldwide cume to $65 million.

Universal’s other big release, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, which just recently passed the $1 billion global box office mark, roared to another $15.5 million, bringing its 4-week domestic total to $363 million, with a phenomenal worldwide take of $1.13 billion, the 18th highest grossing film of all time, proving audiences continue to display a huge appetite for the dinosaur franchise.
