Marvel Studios release dominates in every market where it’s opening, exceeds the best-ever domestic opening mark set by ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens.’
Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War exceeded expectations of cosmic proportions with a record-setting $250 million opening domestic weekend and $630 million worldwide opening weekend, reports Box Office Mojo.
With pre-weekend early showings added, the film stands at $258 million domestic and $383 million foreign for $641 million worldwide.
The movie bested the previous record holder, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which opened with $247 million domestic in December 2015.
Avengers: Infinity War’s foreign haul of $380 million was the second-best of all time to Fate of the Furious’ $443 million debut, of which $185 million came from China, where Avengers: Infinity War has yet to open.
The weekend was understandably a bit off for any film that was not Avengers: Infinity War. Marvel Studios’ previous release, Black Panther, landed in fifth place with $4.4 million domestic in its 11 weekend of release. It stands at $688 million domestic, $643 million foreign for $1.3 billion worldwide.
Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One came in ninth place with $2.4 million domestic in its fifth weekend of release. The Warner Bros. release has earned $131 million domestic and $414 million foreign for $545 million worldwide.
And in 11th place is Wes Anderson’s stop-motion animated feature Isle of Dogs, with $1.4 million in domestic ticket sales in its sixth weekend in release. The movie has grossed $27 million domestic and $18 million foreign for a $45 million worldwide total.
