Atlantis To Rise For DreamWorks

DreamWorks has optioned the rights to ATLANTIS RISING, a comic book from Platinum Studios, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci will produce the live-action feature adaptation for DreamWorks. Platinum chairman and CEO Scott Mitchell Rosenberg will also produce.

ATLANTIS is Rosenberg's creation, a five-part miniseries first published last November. The last installment is due in late April. Scott O. Brown wrote the fifth book with illustrations by Tim Irwin and Andy Elder.

The plot follows a discovery of a civilization buried under the deepest part of the ocean, and what happens when that civilization emerges to wage war with the Earthlings.

"The comic brings a fresh, techno-thriller approach to a story that holds all the tenets of a classic us-vs.-them alien invasion movie," Kurtzman said to the REPORTER.

Rosenberg said the story, for him, echoes, "the global debate on our impact to the environment."

Randy Greenberg, CEO of Greenberg Group (and former Universal senior exec.), will executive produce with Platinum's Rich Marincic to co-produce.

Kurtzman and Orci, who brought the project to DreamWorks, will produce through their own DreamWorks-based shingle.

DreamWorks and Universal optioned the rights to Platinum property COWBOYS AND ALIENS last year and are developing the sci-fi Western with Kurtzman and Orci and Imagine Ent.

Sought-after pair Kurtzman and Orci are currently working on TRANSFORMERS 2 and are in post on thriller EAGLE EYE from DreamWorks for a September release.
