Hello to all!
I'm from Turkey and I wanna go for MA in Animation. I have graduated from Communication and Design with a BA degree 2 years ago and for this two years time I worked in film production as 3rd assistant director but now I want to enter the animation industry. I can use photoshop and flash, know a little bit of Java script and Html. I'm trying to prepare a portfolio but I need an advice from people who have been through this. How strong should be my portfolio? Few projects with photoshop, photography projects, a presentation with flash and 2 short films.. that's all I got. Do I need a better knowledge of animation or a drawing background to go for masters? or maybe I should just take a short course? I will be very glad if you could write your comments thnx
need advice!!
need advice!!
If I could do it all over again, I'm in a MA program, I would take as many undergrad classes in 3D modeling and animation as possible. I didn't need them to get into my program, but I think I would have gotten a lot more out of school if I was further up the learning curve.
If you're planning on attending school in September 2008, take whatever classes you can in the upcoming spring and summer. Definitely take figure drawing classes, can't go wrong with that.
There are a lot of threads regarding portfolios, do a search and you'll prolly find your answer and lots of examples.
thanks for your reply.. I was planning to start in september 2007 but if i can't get my portfolio ready till februrary then I won't be accepted. It seems like drawing classes are pretty much necessary for a good start, that's what most of the people say. Where do you study by the way?
What type of animation program are you interested in? 2D? 3D? Stop motion? Cutout collage style like JibJab does? What you're going after will influence what type of portfolio you put together.
Generally speaking, the type of work schools look for in an animation portfolio are the "classic" skills: life drawing, color, design, etc., but that can vary depending on what school and discipline you're applying for. Your work in the film industry will probably be a big plus in your column, since it shows that you're familiar with film language.
I'm interested in 3D animation. I will try my chances in both Europe and Canada. There are some MA programs in Holland like EMMA(european media master of arts) Did anyone hear about it? In Canada I found diploma programs rather than master degree. VanArts and Sheridan give 1 year diploma course and New Brunswick Community has 2 years diploma prog. Don't know which one is better yet.
