The youngest students I get are high schoolers during Ringling's Precollege program but more and more of them are coming in with some exposure to 3D. Some are getting it by sitting at home with a copy of some software but an equal amount are getting it in some sort of high school class.
As for children I wouldn't know where to start though I think my ten year old is about at the age where he can start wrapping his head around some of the concepts you run into in 3D.
How young are the students you are talking about because I saw this program http://www.cosmicblobs.com/ at SIGGRAPH last year and it looked pretty fun for the younger crowd.
