has anyone tried drawing keys directly in flash?

well i remember this incident where one of my animtors who isnt working with us anymore had some time at lunch and he was plying with a cheap tablet we had lying around. So he goes and draws some of the keys in Flash directly. of course it would be a pain to do the rest like add chracter and clean up.
but does anyone do this or has tried this? just thinking of ways of getting closer to direct digital animation

Take a look at some of the animation Pascal, Internalcow and I have done over in the show and tell section.

thanx AA. i just saw the one by Pascal(balloon) and it totally blew me away. fantastic that. quite funny and it expresses all there is to be expressed, funny how you can do that with lines :)

but i wanted to know if anyone has tried doing this for a broadcast situation. like say a tv show that works in flash or toon boom. where instead of drawing and then digitising in Flash u directly work in Flash. does that happen? (not at the cost of it not looking traditional celish)

u mean u don't want to do traditional anymore?

Sure it happens. A show called Jacob two two, Produced by nelvana, all animation is done in flash. Another show called Carl Squared as well. You can check that one out at teletoon.ca

The only thing to do with good advice is to pass it on. It is never of any use to oneself. My Blog: Strange Thoughts

I think bardel in vancouver does that for broadcast television and I believe their could be some of that going on in Montreal as well. They may also use shapes when it is suitable.

i mean i want to substiture pencil with a mouse/stylus and paper with a tablet. is that on? or not?

I recently worked on a project for television broadcast where the animators did all their keys in Flash. It's being done for an animation festival and I did some clean up and ink and paint on it. Rough keys as well as inbetweens and clean-ups were all done in Flash. Safe to say that it took quite some effort to finish one scene. The work is very much like in the traditional process where the animators do the rough keys first, swf test, then rough inbetweening, swf test and then clean up and paint next. A team is assigned for each department. The look and style of animation is very much like the one in Kill Bill's O-ren Ishi scene.

So I guess wacom tablets and styluses are good substitutes for paper and pencil.

Yes it can be done.
Spoooze!

well there is nothing that cant be done :)

Sandrock, do you think it would have been quicker to put pencil to paper or was there anything gained by working on Flash straight. id reckon you would have insight into this.

I drew keys in Flash for some of the shots in my Frog and Princess short. Drawing the keys directly in Flash eliminated the step of having to retrace the drawings, so for me, it helped save time. The short is on my website if you want to watch it. Just click the Animations link.

Well, if there was anything gained, it was in how fast you can line test your work right away. Obviously you can save on paper and there's no need to sharpen the pencil. Ink and paint can be done straight away too. The ability of Flash to deliver in different formats like swf, avi and quicktime is also a plus. You can also undo and redo mistakes. I go through erasers like a maniac, so I sort of appreciated that feature when working with Flash.

There is a certain degree of control needed when using the Wacom pen, though. I guess it would not be a problem if you are using Cintiq or a Tablet PC. If you are after really clean and crisp clean up lines, then that would take some time when using the Wacom pen. I am still a fan of traditional pencil and paper animation, but I can say that you can save a certain amount of time if it were done in Flash.

Some of my co-workers who first tried Flash used to complain how it would have been quicker if an artwork were done in pencil and paper. But as they developed their Wacom pen drawing skill, the work became easier.

Curiously, I noticed that some of my co-workers who have excellent drawing skills translates their drawings into Flash quite well.

I am speaking for myself, though. I guess it's all in the animator's preference.

I'm Making a film at the mo, drawn straight into flash. It's quite liberating in a way and you can't be precious about the line etc cause a lot of it is down to how flash renders a line. You just got to go with the flow

With onion skinning and if you know the tool, why would this be any different than drawing with a pencil and paper. And I would think clean up and tweening would be easier since the character was already digitalized. Adding additional characters would only require an additional layer or so to accomplish.

funny..
I am just seeing this thread for the first time.
Hi skinny...
what i do here, is a cut down watered down version of what i do for commercials( which are broadcast)
my style is quite recognisable, so it is not necessarily a good example, but, a few months ago we did a spot for cartoon network, on lazlo's camp, that was suposed to be hand drawn,
because of time , we did it all in flash, ( and after effects for comping)

we presented the agency with a few style frames, some done straight in flash, some done by hand, to ask them if we were getting close enough.
they were not able to make the differnce.

hence.. since then, all the work from prepro to finshed, two d animation is done via flash..
it usually ends up in aftereffects though..

i seen that ad before i thought it was hand drawn.

just another ereason why pascal RULES! :D

Thunderobot
Thanks again!
I'll have time this weekend to take a look at your stuff.
I tried late last night(early this morning), but i don't have the proper version of whatever software to look at your stuff

also., skynni lizard, i'd recommend you take a look at Ape's stuff, natchios( mr coot), and , foster's home is done all in flash as well... symbol maybe, but, it is EXTREMELY good animation, design, and fun!

P.

hey some of that stuff is quite wicked. i wonder how it works when you have to do it real quick, whether you would do it in flash or switch to paper.
cool stuff. im lookin at the clip. i saw apes stuff and ive marked down when Fosters comes on tomorrow :)
be back on this.

how do you mean??

some of these or just illustrations.other concept sketches.
when I have a professional deadline I have a whole process that i go through, and walk the "clients" through before we actually start the job.
Most of the time, I found you need to educate the client ,a nd really comfort him because they tend to get scared when they can't make the transition between the sketch and the finish.

sometimes, for big big clients, we would make animation guides, that basically were a brochure of the animation steps , one by one, with various examples of CG /stop motion and two d stuff.

It helped a lot , because that way the clients trusted us more and felt we knew what we were doing!

you should ask ape how it works for him

What type of company do you work at/for/own?

you could PM me if you have questions about anything
P.

i mean whats the preference for ur end? paper or tablet?

depends on a few things
the weather, how bad was the coffe, how tired I am, what music is playing, what my deadline is, if Ihave any..lol

things like that

(^__^)
P.

haha. nice.
