favorite artists?

I'm feeling underexposed to good art, which may be one reason for my plateau. I'm especially interested in styles/methods of shading, as all my art is pure outlines
any recommendations?

I've recently been inspired by the underground/lowbrow art scene... Here's a few artists I particularly enjoy:

Tim Biskup
Jeff Soto
Gary Baseman
Doze Green
Glenn Bar
Mark Ryden

Rembrandt
Da Vinci
Bonnard
Rothko
Deibenkorn
Turner
Sargent
Giacometti
Oldenberg

I followed art in college but I don't anymore. These were a few of my favorites.

Boss, you say your chief interest is shading. Most of my choices reflect my interest in lighting and texture.

Since you're interested in shading, you might want to check out Caravaggio's works.

Artists I admire and enjoy

Hello.

Hre is my list of folks

Chuck Jones
Ward Kimball
Don Bluth
Chris Sanders
James Baxter
Dean Dubois

Robert Liberace
DiVinci
Glenn Vilppu
Sally Boswell
Sue Nichols

that's a good start

I'm always interested in lighting and shading, and will thus second the motion for you to view any chiaroscuro like Caravaggio...

thanks very much guys
it's been a pleasure looking through such a wide variety of different styles, and appreciate your help

I remember Caravaggio from art history class... probably the only name I remember :D really awesome stuff
but I actually should've been more specific; I'm most interested in finding experts at different black and white comic book rendering techniques. I've seen examples of pure ink, inkwash, screentones, etc, and really appreciate the interest that all the extra strokes add to the pieces (like I said, I usually just flat shade in my outlines)

here's a few more

Well if you want more comic book style artists how about:
Will Eisner
Simon Bisley
Mike Mignola
Dave McKean
Mobius (look more at his old Blueberry stuff, although all is other work is great)

And some illustrators:
Ronald Searle (he did the character designs for "101 dalmatians")
Ralph Steadman
Gerald Scarfe (he did the character designs for Disney's "Hercules")

Edgar Degas as well

Da Vinci
Aubrey Beardsley
Edward Gorey
Terlizzi

...In that order, I guess.

Definately:
-Lane Smith... He did the character designs for "James and the Giant Peach"
-Chris Riddle... British political cartoonish and children book illustrator
-Peter de Sevé... Illustrator and character designer for all the big nice companies like Disney, Pixar and Blue Sky. (http://www.peterdeseve.com/)
These are just three of my favourites, if you want more, just ask!

BTW, if it's shading and rendering you're insterested in, you should Definitely check out Don Seegmiller's book: Digital Character Design and Painting. It has some beautiful instruction on rendering illustrations.
