Two of San Francisco's most unique non-profit organizations join forces to present Cartooning With Students: A Cartoon Art Museum/826 Valencia Project. This exhibition features the works of more than 20 elementary school students, ages 7-14, representing 13 Bay Area elementary schools. Featured works include comicstrips and comicbook pages by students from Buena Vista Elementary, Cabrillo Elementary, Clarendon Elementary, Edison Charter Elementary, Gratton Elementary, Lakeshore Elementary, SF Waldorf Elementary and Spring Valley Elementary. Students and 826 Valencia's tutors have worked together throughout the 2006 school year on this project, and the Cartoon Art Museum is pleased to present the final results of this collaboration.
Five short "field trip" stories are also featured in this exhibition. Local cartoonists Jon Adams, Andy Hartzell, Emma Hewitt and Glenn Schon collaborated with students to produce such stories as CRAZY GOOGLE AND HIS BOAT OF CHEESE! and THE RACE FOR GOLD! The participating schools in this activity are Argonne Elementary, Guadalupe Elementary, The Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy, Lawton Elementary and West Portal Elementary. Students also created two special edition newspapers as part of this project. Keith Knight, creator of the syndicated comics THE K CHRONICLES and (TH)INK, assisted students with the production of The SUN, while Paul Madonna, creator of ALL OVER COFFEE, a regular feature in the SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE, assisted with The Valencia Bay-farer.
The opening reception for this exhibition and Draw Me A Story: A Century of Children's Book Illustration will be held on Thursday, July 6, 2006, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet the student artists featured in this exhibition as well as many of the Bay Area's most prominent professional cartoonists at this star-studded event. The Opening Reception will also include drawing activities for children. Attendees will receive special activity books created by the staff and students of 826 Valencia. This reception is free and open to the public.
This project is funded by MetLife Foundation under its Museum Connections Program.
