Hello. I have been around this forum for a while now, and I had an idea that I wanted to express to the members here.
Since this forum has a pretty consistant group of artists, especially in the daily thread, what would be the possibility of pulling off a group picture. Here is how I would see it:
Someone draw an open background and mark 10 areas where a person's character could stand. Then on the forum, 10 people would decide who would be in the picture, sort of on a first come first serve basis. Ex: First person to say they are in would pick Spot #5, and so on...
Each person involved could download a line art version of the background.
Each person would draw there own characters to fit in that area, completely colored without the background. It doesn't matter what style, just so that it is filled in.
Then, someone would composite everyones finished art into the finished background.
Characters can be facing the "camera" or interacting with each other, as long as it is decided upon by the members.
Background artists should probably determine specific characteristics of the environment such as direction of light, wind, etc. Anything that may apply or cause the picture to unify better.
I would be willing to test this out with 4 other members just to make sure that it works. I am thinking of doing a police line up background with all characters facing the camera. I will work on the background this weekend and then ask for volunteers once it is done. I will think about format and criteria for the drawings and post them when I finish the background. Dpi's and file format.
I'm sure this could turn out really great or blow up in my face.
For now, I would just like to hear any suggestions or the general feel of the project.

Class of '05, eh? Sure, why not, count me in.
bunch of us facing a firing squad ?? count me in too, whatever the theme !

Jabberwocky and Spacemonkey,
If you guys don't mind, I'll count you in for 2 of the spots. I'll take one and I'll wait for 2 more.
Thanks,
KalEl118
great idea! ...don't think I have the time though. Maybe next time!
I know I don't have the time, but I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with
Sounds like fun. Count me in.

So kdiddy13 is in now. One slot left to whoever wants it.
Happy to see so much support. If I get time, I will work on the background tonight.
Looking forward to getting this rolling.
KalEl118
... this isn't the final background. I just through this together as the template that I will be working off of.
kdiddy13, spacemonkey, and Jabberwocky: Feel free to get started on your characters. Remember that the bigger the better. If you think you can finish your art at 300 dots per inch and then email it to me, that would be great. If you don't think that works for you or have a different idea, please let me know.
I will probably line the characters from left to right: sman118, Jabberwocky, spacemonkey, kdiddy13, and whoever wants the last spot.
About the background. If I had to pick, I would say that the lights are probably along the ceiling in front of them. so the light source is coming from above and in front of them.
Looking forward to seeing your additions.
KalEl118
Awesome. I wouldn't mind if you arranged the characters in what ever order looks best. But I'll leave that up to you.
What time frame are you looking for this to be completed? Can you handle an eps file? That way you can scale it to whatever res you want.
In any event, I'm looking forward to getting started on it.

For some reason the bg of a police line up is calling to me. I'd love to add my character to it. However, I know I'm not a regular poster, more of constant lurker, so if you'd prefer to have someone else who you all know better, that's cool. But if you don't care, then I'll take the spot.

Seems that way to me too Krazy (police lineup), go ahead and take the spot. We've done similar things to this on different Halloweens in costume. Will be interesting to see what you guys come up with.

Done with mine, but which email address does it go to?
In a future attempt, it might be neat if someone roughed-out the layout beforehand so characters can interact with their environment and each other.
The Crumb family did some collaborative comics where each family member drew his/herself.
I have mine ready too, just need an email of where to send it.

sure, Eps's should be fine because I'm pretty sure that they import into quicktime. I'm pretty close to finishing the background. Trying to make it dirty, old, and interesting. I also figured out which character to draw.
I'll post the background as soon as it's done.
KalEl118
sorry, didn't even see all of the new posts. Krazyclaws, great to have you on.
Send your finished stuff to sman118@hotmail.com
I am trying to finish the background before I do my character. I never set a time limit, but I think its great that you guys finished so quick. I will try and hurry so no one has to wait to long.
Thanks again.
KalEl118
Here is my final background for the line up. I am looking forward inserting our creations.
Also, when the people send me their pictures, if they could put AWN somewhere in the subject line, that would keep me from accidentally deleting the email. If you have already sent it, don't worry.
Hope you like.
KalEl118
I've already received Krazyklaws and Jabberwocky's submissions and they look great!!! No rush to the remaining people but I am already starting on mine.
Just wanted to ask that the remaining people post or email me a height preference for their character so that I know how to size them.
I will post the results once I have them all in so that everyone can view each other's art at the same time. Don't know why, I just think it will be cooler that way.
KalEl118
I should have mine around the end of the week. Will this still work for everyone?

I have no problem with the end of the week. It actually gives me a little time to breath too.
I have composited the two completed characters into the background and added a shadow to the wall behind them to make them "pop" out a bit.
KalEl118
Hey KalEl,
I just sent my drawing off to you last night. I forgot to mention the height: around 6 ft (or whatever looks good with the others). I'll trust your judgment.
Thanks again,

I'm sorry. I don't think I got the picture. could you please resend it and put the title "AWN" in the subject line. I either never got it or accidentally deleted it. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I don't know why it isn't working. what kind of file format are you sending? Maybe my hotmail doens't like it for some reason?
If it doesn't work again, do you think you could just post it on your website or maybe a free site like photo bucket and I'll just download it off of that?
Sorry for the inconvenience.
KalEl118
Just wanted to see how everyone's project was going. I know that mine, krazyklaws, and jabberwocky are all finished. Kdiddy13 also finished and right now we are trying to get his stuff over to me.
The only one left is spacemonkey. No rush, just wondering if he had a time frame.
Thanks everyone, again, for the help. I love the way it is turning out and can't wait to show you the great work that everyone has done.
Thanks.
KalEl118
On the next prodject, do you wont people like me. Just now learning this stuff and that includes drawing.
I would be interested in any new comers, even those that are still learning. Mostly because I think we are all still learning. I know that I personally have short comings as an artist and that keeps me working to refine my craft.
My only concern with someone who feels that they are just begining is that they may not be able to deliver a polished, final picture. Not that it won't be good, but for the compositing's sake, it might not be clean enough to place with other work.
My suggestion is to keep at your work, address any problems that you have instead of trying to find away around them, and put your pictures up on the forum for some honest critiques. Once you feel comfortable with your ability, then I would be happy to include you in a group project.
Hope that wasn't too long winded.

Nicely done! Congrats to all who participated.
Very nice, add my congrats too.
Nicely done, but why all the links just to get to it. Why not post a smaller version right here on the board.
Wontobe, there are all kinds of chances to post your work. The old Halloween things were just some of us having fun. And there was no prequalification needed. Maybe we'll do another one this year. Hang in there.

And KalEl118 you need to look at your shadows. You "quote" composited, but your light is coming from like at least two different directions.
Pat Hacker, Visit Scooter's World.
sorry for all of the linking. I wasn't sure if the finished product should go here because it just felt like pictures should go in the "Show and Tell." And as far as the shadows, I had it in my head to have to lights slightly to the sides of the room and that is why I had the shadows that way. In retrospect, I probably should have done one light in the center and had the shadow's spread out.
Thanks for the critique.
KalEl118
Nice job, glad to help. Let's do that again sometime.
