This week sees new looks at some hot 2009 fall releases and the first looks at some big summer 2010 releases. What films for fall 2009 and summer 2010 are you excited about seeing?
Getting Buzzed
8) How to Train Your Dragon (March 26, 2010)
Trailer
On paper this one looks so promising, but the first trailer has dampened my excitement. I don't like Jay Baruchel as the voice of the lead character. It's distracting casting of a hot young star. I'm also not a fan of the salamander-looking dragon design. I'm still hoping there is more KUNG FU PANDA here than MONSTERS VS. ALIENS.
7) La Danse (Nov. 4, 2009)
Trailer
This documentary follows the behind-the-scenes action of The Paris Opera Ballet's preparation for seven ballets. Looks hectic. I'm sure it will be fascinating for dance fans like me.
6) Shakes Hands with the Devil (TBA)
Trailer
Based on Lieutenant-General Roméo Dallaire’s award-winning book, the film chronicles the many factors that went into the Rwandan genocide. Much of the film was filmed on location in Rwanda. Could be an eye-opener.
5) Salt (July 23, 2010)
Trailer
Here is the first of the first looks at big summer releases. Angelina Jolie plays a CIA agent accused of being a double agent for Russia. When she goes on the run, everyone wonders who Salt really is. Looks like another showcase for Jolie to look badass.
4) Eichmann (TBA)
Trailer
Thomas Kretschmann plays Adolf Eichmann as the notorious Nazi is captured and put on trial for his crimes. I've liked Kretschmann ever since THE PIANIST. I can't remember having seen another Nazi on the run story like this one. Could be an interesting look into what turns men evil.
3) Brothers (Dec. 4, 2009)
Trailer
The buzz is waning for this one. The foreign-language original was brilliant, but this trailer makes the drama of the Danish version look like melodrama. Great actors and a great director still make me want to see it though.
2) The Road (Nov. 25, 2009)
Trailer
This is an emotional new look at THE ROAD. I've seen it and it's moving. Not as epically bleak as the book, but still an amazing existential portrait of all the fears parents have for their children.
1) The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (May 28, 2010)
Trailer
Now in no way do I believe this film will be better than THE ROAD. However, since the release of the trailer, the summer buzz has officially begun. This is going to be a big one for 2010. Could it be the first good film based on a videogame? The trailer makes it certainly look like a thrill ride.
