Silver Pictures Sets Up Orson Scott Card's Empire

Joel Silver's Silver Pictures has preemptively bought rights to Orson Scott Card's new book and videogame series, EMPIRE, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Provo, Utah-based Chair Ent. Group is the underlying rights holder.

Set in a near future after the White House has been bombed, the president assassinated and a civil war has broken out, a lone spy, who is being framed for the attack, sets out to uncover the truth. Brothers Donald and Geremy Mustard of Chair and Card have developed game prototype based on the novel, which is due out on Nov. 28, 2006.

Speed Racer a Go with Wachowski Bros.

THE MATRIX masterminds Larry and Andy Wachowski are set to write and direct a long-in-development, live-action version of SPEED RACER, reports the trades. The project will reunited the brothers with their MATRIX collaborators -- producer Joel Silver, exec producer Grant Hill and visual effects supervisor John Gaeta.

Based on Tatsuo Yoshidas classic 1960s anime series, the story will chronicle the adventures of the young racecar driver Speed as he strives for fame and glory in his pimped out vehicle, Mach 5.

Weta Digital Signed for Fox’s Silver Surfer

After nabbing James Camerons long-awaited AVATAR, Weta Digital is on the rise again: Twentieth Century Fox has chosen the Oscar-winning New Zealand studio to oversee vfx duties on THE FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER, reports THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

Character actor Doug Jones (PANS LABYRINTH, HELLBOY and HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY) will provide performance capture work in the creation of Marvel Comics Silver Surfer in much the same way that Andy Serkis portrayed Gollum and King Kong.

Kidman to Star in Hirschbiegel's Invasion

Nicole Kidman is set to star in a sci-fi thriller, INVASION, for Warner Bros. Joel Silver is producing through Silver Pictures, reports DAILY VARIETY. Silver chose Oliver Hirschbiegel, the German helmer of DOWNFALL, to direct INVASION as his first English-language studio feature.

David Kajganich penned the script about a behavior-changing epidemic that decimates the human race. Kidman will play a D.C. psychiatrist who figures out that extraterrestrials are behind the invasion and battles to protect her son, who may hold the key to stopping the takeover.

Brand management and television production company Silver Lining Productions Ltd. has signed toy manufacturer Gund to create plush toys, outfits and soft accessories for their kids property OLIVIA, based on the book series by Ian Falconer. Silver Lining And Millimages In Development With Toot And Puddle

Silver Lining Productions Ltd. and Millimages have developed a script for a television holiday special based on ILL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS, the most recent edition in the TOOT & PUDDLE childrens book series written and illustrated by Holly Hobbie. The production team is also in development on a 26-part animated series based on the complete collection of TOOT & PUDDLE books. The companies are seeking broadcaster interest at the NATPE 2002 show.

Silver Lining Productions has inked a deal with independent animation company King Rollo Films to develop a new childrens series DENNIS AND THE MONSTERS, based on the Bristish book series. Silver Lining has also entered into an agreement with European animation producer Millimages to develop a holiday special and TV series based on TOOT & PUDDLE, a childrens book series written and illustrated by Holly Hobbie. The series will be geared to young children.

Universal Pictures chairman Casey Silver was forced to resign after a year of consistent box office flops such as "Primary Colors," "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," "Out of Sight," "Meet Joe Black," and this weekend's disastrous opening of the expensive sequel "Babe: Pig in the City," which was slaughtered by two other family-oriented features, Disney's "A Bug's Life'" and Paramount's "The Rugrats Movie." Silver had been head of Universal's movie production, marketing and distribution since November 1995.
