To Live (And Almost Die) In Russia . . . But All’s Well That Ends Well

Over the years animators have asked me “aren’t you afraid to go to Russia?” and “what would happen if you got seriously ill there?”  The answer to the first question has always been no, attending KROK is very safe and I have never been afraid in Russia. Now I can answer the second question with firsthand knowledge.  The KROK staff will make sure that you get excellent medical treatment if you should get seriously ill.

18th INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF ANIMATION ANIMAEVKA, Mogilev, Mogilevskaya Region, Belarus: 9 - 13 September 2015

My only previous encounter with Belarus was when I was thrown off the train in Minsk and sent back to Poland because I didn’t have a Belarus travel visa on my trip from Belgium to Moscow.  This all changed when I was invited to be a juror at the Animaevka Animation Festival.

Taiwan International Graphic Design Award 2015

Begins: May 27, 2015

The Taiwan International Graphic Design Award (TIGDA) 2015 competition has opened for entries and designers from all regions and countries are invited to participate.

The Competition is open for innovative works in two categories – Poster Design and Corporate Identity Design – through individual or group registration.

Almost 30 separate awards – medals and certificates – will be announced in November 2015 and the best works will be features in a special publication prepared by the organizer.

Each of the two main competition categories have subcategories:

  1. Taiwan International Poster Design Award:
    • Specific Theme: Human Concerning, Sustainable Development (Environment Protection, Energy Conservation and Carbon Reduction are included.) (Type A)
    • Non-specific Theme: Commerce, Arts, Public Welfare and Purpose Popularization. (Type B)
  2. Taiwan International CI Design Award:
    • Corporate Identity: Brand, logo and other series of design application works for corporations and institutions. (Type C)
    • Event Identity: Logo and series of design application works for commercial campaigns/events. (Type D)

Submitted entries must be original creations of the contestants completed after 30 June 2013.

The competition is organized by the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Economic Affairs of China in collaboration with International Council of Design (ico-D) and Japan Graphic Designers Association (JAGDA).

FESA – Festival of European Student Animation in Belgrade, Serbia

FESA – Festival of European Student Animation, was established in 2012
under the auspices of Serbian Ministry for Culture.
The main goal of the festival is to promote the art of animation
from the European countries and to create conditions that will enable
the younger generation to conquer new concepts and new technologies.
The Festival of European Student Animation is going to be held
in the period of August 29th to 30th 2015.
The Festival comprises of Students Competition programme
(film schools and single student authors)
This year’s competition theme is SYMBOLS
in the widest sense of the terms.

Call for Entries | 19th Japan Media Arts Festival

Begins: February 3, 2016

Deadline: September 9, 2015 (18:00 Japan Standard Time)

The Japan Media Arts Festival is a comprehensive festival of Media Arts (Media Geijutsu) that honors outstanding works from a diverse range of media - from animation and comics to media art and games. The festival gives awards in each of its four divisions: Art, Entertainment, Animation, and Manga. Since its inception in 1997, the festival has recognized significant works of high artistry and creativity, and in addition to a yearly Exhibition of Award-winning Works has held other events, such as symposiums, screenings, and showcases.

Entries are sought from professional, amateur, independent and commercial creators across the globe. Works completed or released between September 3, 2014 and September 9, 2015 are eligible for entry in the four divisions - Art, Entertainment, Animation and Manga.

ANIFILM INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF ANIMATED FILMS - Trebon, Czech Republic; 5 – 10 May, 2015

     When ANIFILM International Festival of Films comes to town for one week each year the historic spa town of Trebon becomes the animation capitol of the Czech Republic. The festival combines the best of the new animation with screenings of historic Czech films.  The festival is a puppet animator’s dream, with screenings of films by such masters of the art as Jiri Trnka and Vlasta Pospisilova.  There were even live puppet shows in the park which surrounds the castle in the center of town.

FETE DE L’ANIM - 27 through 29 March, Tourcoing, France

 Each year the Fete De l’Anim brings students from all over Europe together with a small group of international professionals for three days of master classes, screenings, and hands on projects.  It is a marvellous opportunity for students to hear some of the top professionals from the world of independent animation as well as people from such studios as Pixar and Disney talk about the processes they use to create their work.  The students also have the opportunity to ask questions and show their portfolios to the masters to get feedback.

KLIK! INTERNATIONAL ANIMATION FESTIVAL at THE EYE in AMSTERDAM, 4 - 9 November 2014

KLIK! is always a perfect blend of excellent animation and fun, Fun, FUN, but when Lesley the Pony pranced into the Eye this year he brought a whole new meaning to fun!   The spirit of Lesley the Pony, created by Christian Larrave as his junior year project at the Rhode Island School of Design (USA), fit right in with this year’s festival theme of Gender Bending:  Girls, Boys, and Beyond.
