Thomas & Friends Bucks the Trend with Book Sales Up

Preschool property, THOMAS & FRIENDS continues its phenomenal publishing success with U.K. book sales up 10 percent in 2008.

First published in 1945 in a series of classic story books entitled THE RAILWAY SERIES, written by The Reverend W. Awdry, THOMAS & FRIENDS has sold more than 200 million books globally to date. Chatterbox Penelope Headed To France

TV-Loonland has secured a deal with France 5, for the preschool series, PENELOPE (54 x 5), in addition to key broadcaster signings, including DR TV Denmark and Hop! Channel Israel.

PENELOPE is a well-established brand in Japan on NHK with a full licensing and merchandising program comprising of more than 24 licensing deals concluded by the TV series' producer Nippon Animation.

It's Around The World For Horrid Henry

Independent producer Novel Entertainment closed an international sales and distribution deal with Little Bird Rights to distribute the popular HORRID HENRY TV animation series around the world (excluding the United Kingdom), the companies announced today.

Commissioned by CITV in the U.K., the 52 x 11 minute 2D series will be available to buyers at MIPTV 2008.

Coolabi Brings Poppy Cat to Nick Jr.

Leading children's television producer Coolabi Productions Ltd. today announced the commission of new animated series POPPY CAT, based on the popular books by Lara Jones, for Nickelodeon U.K.'s preschool channel Nick Jr.

The 52x11 animated series is Coolabi's first original commission for Nickelodeon, although two series of Coolabi's hit animation KING ARTHUR'S DISASTERS were picked up last year by Nick Jr., where they found a strong fan-base. Due to air in late 2009, the animated series will use a multi-plane technique to mirror the pop-up feel of the books.

Patterson, Curious Sign Animation Deal

New York's Curious Pictures and James Patterson Entertainment (JPE) will co-produce long-form animation based on Patterson's books, graphic novels and original ideas, C21 MEDIA reports. While several of Patterson's books have already been adapted for TV, the new deal will allow him not only to develop new concepts, but also to exploit media other than film and TV and to exercise more control over his creations.

4400 Book Descending Soon

Titan Books will publish THE 4400: THE OFFICIAL COMPANIO, SEASONS 1 AND 2, the first of a series of behind-the-scenes books about USA Network's sci-fi series THE 4400.

The first companion is set to coincide with the premiere of the fourth season on USA and the release of the season-three DVD set in summer 2007.

The tome will include behind-the-scenes interviews, factual nuggets, quotes, trivia, extensive episode guides, exclusive photos and a 16-page full-color supplement. It will sell for $14.95.

Library Adds Animated Versions Of Classic Children’s Books

The Lafayette Public Library has added animated versions of classic childrens books to its website www.lafayette.lib.la.us, reports THE DAILY ADVERTISER. This new feature, called Tumble Books, includes sound, music and narration added to read-along text.
