According to a report in Variety, Joss Whedon and Marvel Studios are wrapping up a deal to direct Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and the Incredible Hulk in the The Avengers. Whedon is also reworking Zak Penn’s script. The film is slated to be released May 4, 2012.
Whedon, the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly and the recent Dollhouse, was in talks with Joel Silver at Warner Bros. to direct Wonder Woman, but the collaboration stalled supposedly because of creative issues. He just finished writing the horror film Cabin in the Woods for MGM, which he will also produce.
Though Whedon has directed many episodes from all his Fox series as well as a recent episode of Glee, Serenity is his only feature film directing credit. That film was based on Firefly, which had a short run on Fox. Whedon’s relationship with Marvel dates back to his days as a writer on the Astonishing X-Men series.
The Avengers will bring together Robert Downey Jr. (as Iron Man), Chris Evans (as Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (as Thor) and Samuel L. Jackson (as Nick Fury). Edward Norton may also return as the Hulk.
