Tom Sito, professor of Cinema Practice at the University of Southern California, is slated to present a talk on the history of computer graphics at the Ottawa International Animation Festival on Sunday, September 22.

Those of you headed to the Ottawa International Animation Festival later this month are in for a treat -- Tom Sito, who has been named one of the top 100 most influential people in animation, has been slated to host a special presentation on the history of Computer Animation.
TOM SITO: A HISTORY OF COMPUTER ANIMATION will take place on Sunday, September 22, at 1:00 p.m. at the Main Floor of St. Brigid’s. This year’s festival takes place September 18-22.
A professor of Cinema Practice at the University of Southern California, Sito will explain how computer graphics has changed the way we experience media today—the difference between Steamboat Willie and Buzz Lightyear, between ping pong and PONG.
Sito, himself an animator, describes the evolution of computer graphics, with a memorable cast of characters: math nerds, avant-garde artists, cold warriors, hippies, video gamers—disparate types united by a common vision. Computer animation did not begin just with Pixar; Sito shows how fifty years of work by this motley crew made movies like Toy Story and Avatar possible.
Other OIAF talks include the Meet the Filmmakers sessions, giving attendees the chance to ask questions of the filmmakers in competition, exchange comments and share opinions about the films. Additional sessions include interviews with Adam Elliot, Chris Sullivan and Chris Landreth.
Individual tickets ($12 Adults/$7 Canadian Film Institute Members) are available online and 30 minutes before showtime for all other screenings. Passholders have priority seating at all GALA screenings (jury and filmmakers in attendance). Animation Six-Pack ticket holders are given passholder priority.
