ACM SIGGRAPH has announced the SIGGRAPH Computer Animation Festival's Best Animated Short and Jury Award winners for SIGGRAPH 2002. The SIGGRAPH Computer Animation Festival showcases films documenting significant advances in technology, interactive techniques and the creative potential of computer graphics. The two award winners were selected from 640 entries. Poland's Tomek Baginski won the Best Animated Short award for THE CATHEDRAL, based on Jacek Dukaj's novel of the same name. The story of a pilgrim who arrives at a cathedral at the edge of the world was animated and rendered in 3D Studio Max, painted in Photoshop, composited with AfterEffects, and edited with Softimage DS. This submission was selected as the Best Animated Short by unanimous vote of the Computer Animation Festival Jury for its extraordinarily rich visualization and beautiful animation. The Jury Award, which is only given at the request and unanimous vote of the Jury, was presented to Olivier Coulon's film THE DESERTER. SIGGRAPH 2002, the 29th International Conference on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques, will be held July 21-26, 2002 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, San Antonio, Texas.
