Shorts in Competition Revealed for Countryside Animafest Cyprus

33 short films from 14 countries have been selected to compete in the international category, with another 14 films from 7 countries selected in the children’s category, at the 23rd festival edition, coming to Salamiou August 9-12.

Countryside Animafest Cyprus, the International Animation Festival of Cyprus, has announced its official film selections for its 23rd edition, which returns to the village of Salamiou August 9-12, 2024. One of the longest running festivals in Cyprus, the event showcases a selection of the world’s latest productions, focusing on independent, non-commercial films.

33 films from 14 countries were selected in the International Competition; selections were made by Yiorgos Tsangaris, founder and Festival director of Animafest Cyprus and Gerben Schermer, longtime HAFF festival director, and curator of animation and contemporary art. Τwo Grand Prix prizes will be awarded at the festival: one for best Narrative short and one for best Non-Narrative short.

The National Program this year, will include a rich selection of sidebar events by young emerging artists in Animation, Music and Visual Arts. The Cyprus program was curated by graphic artist Popi Pissouriou (Cyprus), brand and motion designer Denis Constantinou (Cyprus), and visual artist Eleni Chandriotou (Cyprus). 4 films in the National competition and 9 films in Cyprus Panorama were selected.

The 14 films from 7 different countries in the Children’s and Young Audience Competition Program were selected by the Tsangaris along with the children’s program pre-selection team of Akos Zeleni (Hungary), Eleni Chandriotou (Cyprus), Marianna Parisi (Cyprus), and George Tsangaris (Cyprus).

The Grand Prix Dimitris Eipides for Narrative, the Grand Prix Dimitris Eipides for Non-Narrative in the International Competition and the First Prize in the National Competition, will be decided by an international jury: artist Marko Tadić  (Croatia), film and festival producer Nadezhda Svirskaia (Russia), and acclaimed Cypriot poet Avgi Lilli.

The best film in Children and Young Audience competition will be decided by the members of the young Jury of the festival.

This year’s festival striking poster was created by Sasha Svirskii, a Russian artist and animator based in Germany.
