BATON ROUGE – The Red Stick International Animation Festival has selected renowned animator Priscillano “Pres” Romanillos as the recipient of its third annual Lifetime Career Achievement Award, which honors animators who have created memorable characters and advanced the field for others. The festival staff and professional jury selected Romanillos, who died of leukemia at age 47 in July, as the first posthumous recipient for this award. After serving as an assistant animator on "The Rescuers Down Under," "Beauty and the Beast" and "Aladdin," Romanillos was promoted to animator on "Pocahontas," working on the title character. He supervised Shan-Yu, the brutal leader of the Huns in "Mulan," then moved to DreamWorks, where he animated various characters for "The Road to El Dorado," "Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas," "Shrek 2," "Madagascar" and Little Creek, the Indian youth in "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron." He did his final animation for Disney's "The Princess and the Frog," and DreamWorks' "Shrek Forever After."

“Pres, one of the most respected and beloved artists at our studio, is well-deserving of this Lifetime Achievement Award. His memory and legacy will forever exist in the characters he brought to life through his beautiful art,” said Jeffrey Katzenberg, Chief Executive Officer of DreamWorks Animation.

East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President Melvin “Kip” Holden and Red Stick Festival Director Stacey Simmons, Ph.D. will formally present the 2010 Red Stick International Animation Festival Lifetime Career Achievement Award on behalf of Pres Romanillos Friday, Nov. 12 at the festival’s VIP Dinner and Awards Presentation.

“Pres was a truly gifted artist who loved the medium, and his work on some of our most beloved animated films will serve as an inspiration for those entering the field for years to come,” Simmons said. “We are proud to honor him with our Lifetime Career Achievement Award in celebration of his life and work.”

The VIP Dinner and Awards Presentation will take place at 8 p.m. in the Riverview Ballroom on the first floor of the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center. The past two recipients of Red Stick International Animation Festival’s Lifetime Career Achievement Award were Mark Henn (2009), a Disney animator who is responsible for creating many of the studio’s iconic princesses, including Ariel of “The Little Mermaid,” Belle of “Beauty and the Beast,” young Simba in “The Lion King” and “Mulan,” and Andreas Deja (2008), one of Disney’s few “keepers of Mickey,” the animators entrusted to sketch Disney’s marquee character, Mickey Mouse. Deja also created some of the company’s most enduring characters, including memorable villains Jafar, from “Aladdin,” and Scar, from “The Lion King.”

LSU’s Center for Computation & Technology sponsors the Red Stick International Animation Festival in partnership with the East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President’s Office, Louisiana Technology Park, Baton Rouge Area Chamber and Baton Rouge Area Digital Industries Consortium.
