Phew! Warner Bros.' ‘Twisters’ Not a Reboot or Continuation of ‘Twister’

Lead Glen Powell reveals the upcoming film, set in the world created by the original 1996 disaster film, is a 'standalone story in the modern day;' the pic storms into theaters July 19, 2024.

What a twist! Glen Powell, star of the upcoming Warner Bros. flick Twisters, has revealed that the film is neither a reboot nor a continuation of Twisters, but rather an original installment within the franchise.

Sitting down with Variety, Powell stated, “It’s definitely not a reboot. We’re not trying to recreate the story from the first one. It’s a completely original story. There are no characters from the original movie back, so it’s not really a continuation. It’s just its own standalone story in the modern-day.”

Powell continued, “I don’t think anyone has brought up this movie in forever, but talking to people, they’re like, ‘That was one of my favorite movies growing up. That movie terrified me.’”

The original 1996 film starred Bill Paxton, Cary Elwes, Helen Hunt, and Philip Seymour Hoffman, and followed the dangerous exploits of a group of scientists hell-bent on furthering tornado-predicting technology. Debuting in the golden era of disaster movies, the film was a global success, garnering nearly $500 million at the box office. The film was praised for its revolutionary visuals by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), receiving Oscar noms for VFX and sound.

Plot details for the second franchise installment have not been revealed, although we know it centers on a pair of storm chasers who attempt to test an experimental weather alert system updated to use modern methods and techniques.

Alongside Powell, Twisters also stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Daryl McCormack and Maura Tierney. Lee Isaac Chung (Minari) is set to direct a script from Mark L. Smith (The Revenant).

Frank Marshall (Jurassic World, Indiana Jones) will produce under his Kennedy/Marshall banner, while Universal’s Sara Scott and Jacqueline Garell will oversee production with Ashley Jay Sandberg for Kennedy/Marshall. The film will be co-financed by Warner Bros. Pictures. ILM returns to create the “disastrous” VFX.

Twisters storms into theaters July 19, 2024.
