TORONTO, ON: ToonBox Entertainment and RedRover Co. Ltd’s feature film THE NUT JOB has recently won an award at this year’s ANIMAGO AWARDS CONFERENCE in Potsdam-Babelsberg, Germany. The award was given for the short film NUTS & ROBBERS based on the characters Surly Squirrel and Buddy the rat who will make their feature debut this time next year. The short won in the category of “Best Character Design” amongst a field of submissions from 62 countries, with a total of five final nominees for that specific category.
“We are very pleased with the award,” says Thom Chapman, VP of ToonBox Entertainment, “it is a testament to the quality of our work and the skill of our production team. This short film has been tremendously well received both domestically and internationally, and has offered great momentum leading up to the Feature Film release. We are already getting offers to spin it into a TV series from both domestic and international broadcasters.”
The Nut Job has been in production since the summer and follows the mischievous antics of Surly and his rat friend Buddy, who are banished from the safety of their community park into the treacherous city, only to find the biggest haul of all – Maury’s not store – prime for the taking. However, unbeknownst to Surly and Buddy, the nut store is a front for four seasoned robbers plotting a bank heist of outrageous proportions – to dig a hole underground to the neighboring bank and swap the money bags for nut bags. The only trouble is that their plan doesn’t factor-in being nut-heisted themselves.
The film was written by industry veteran Lorne Cameron (Ratatouille, Over the Hedge, Brother Bear) and will be released late next year.
