Just what we needed! A prequel Pacific Rim series is now in development as part of a newly minted first-look television deal between Legendary Entertainment and Eric Heisserer (Arrival, Shadow and Bone), reports Variety. Heisserer and Carmen Lewis will team on the project under their Chronology banner.

“Eric is a multitalented, prolific creator whose track record of critical and commercial successes speaks for itself,” said Jason Clodfelter, president of Legendary Television. “We are thrilled to launch our partnership with Eric, Chronology, and Carmen, with a new entry in the epic, globally popular ‘Pacific Rim’ universe. We are certain their vision will make for an enthralling expansion to Legendary’s beloved franchise.”

The original 2013 film follows the monstrous events that occur after an inter-dimensional rift opens at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. The franchise also boasts the sequel film Pacific Rim Uprising, and the anime series Pacific Rim: The Black, which ran for two seasons on Netflix.
